Strongly encourage a trip to the Statue of Liberty. On the tour you also get to go to Ellis Island, which for me, was probably the most magical place in NY I've been to. Plan on spending the better part of a day. I haven't been there in about five years and I plan on going next weekend so let me know if you want to join.
Oh, and get there early and allow a lot of time. The lines are LONG and security is tighter than that to get on a plane so it takes some time but it sure is worth it.
