I think I found something (from the Forum) that explains Derek's appeal to me, from a style perspective (the emotional level just "is"...)
From the Pittsburg-Post Gazette interview, Derek says:
"I tried to steer away from listening to guitar players and focus more on horn players and vocalists," he said. "I didn't want to be playing the stock guitar licks everyone else was playing. If you listen to all guitar players, you become a guitar player and not a musician. I think you can listen to any instrument and adapt it to what you are doing. You are more apt to listen to the musicality of it rather than the technique someone is pulling off."
