Everybody has their own taste in music...and mine is pretty eccentric.
Hell, we're all a little eccentric, or we wouldn't be regulars on the Allman Brothers website.
Personally, I was eating up Gregg singing behind the band. I LOVE that.
I see it as a sign of confidence. Very common among the classic black jazz artists, some bluesmen. Being heavily immersed in Billie Holliday growing up, it is something I always find a bit irritating--rushing lyrics. One of the few pieces where I hear a white singer getting it "right" is Gregg's Stormy Monday on StonyBrook. Gregg even bugged me a little bit last night because he wasn't even farther behind. But almost all singers cause the same reaction. Sometimes I want to shake 'em, sit 'em down in front of Billie Holliday on the box and say, "See, this is how you do it."
Of course that's just me. Not everybody "hears" music like that, or wants to. But it's something I really enjoy...when a vocalist knows how to wait, wait, wait before coming in with a line, bring it back together with the band at the right time.
