Just a quickie review of a great show I saw Sunday night. Trekked up to Blossom near Cleveland for the Tom Petty/Steve Winwood show. Fantastic stuff.
Winwood did a 70 minute warm-up show with a very nice cross-section of old, new, jam, pop and soul tunes. Backed by his right hand guy, Jose Nieto on guitar, with a drummer, sax and percussionist. My highlight was Dear Mr. Fantasy, but Can't Find My Way Home and a jazzier arrangement of Higher Love were very memorable.
For me, it was the 5th time to see TP and the boys, and the best show yet. They stretched and jammed a bit more than on previous shows, and they re-arranged about 3/4 of the tunes during the 2 hour set.
The place was packed, probably a 20,000 + sell-out, and mud everywhere in the parking lots, and it rained hard for about the first 1/2 hour of Steve, but the music made it worthwhile. Strong recommendation on this one, even to the more jam-happy individuals around HTW. Mike Campbell is really a much better player than I ever gave him credit for, and Benmont Tench, on a beautiful grand piano, played beautifully. Good, good stuff.
