GREAT night of music last night in Atlanta. It was awesome watching all the musicians come on stage together last night at the beginning of the Soul Stew set. It looked like about 20 of them coming on stage after Kirk West gave proper intro. I couldn't have picked a better way to end the night on stage than I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free (sung beautifully by Susan T) followed by a monster encore of Anyday w/Mike & Susan dueting, plus Luther Dickinson on guitar and four piece horns. The joy in the place was amazing at that moment. Hard to explain, but you've all been there before. Gonna Move was another highlight, as was Don't Keep Me Wondering with Luther & Derek trading off the signature slide licks. A number of other tunes I didn't recognize had the crowd dancing away. Susan & Derek darn near filled the 4600 seat Fox Theatre, even with Widespread playing just down the street. They've come a long way! Doing it playing old school soul and r&b, blues and guitar jam music, far from today's music scene mainstream. Thanks to Rusty & Donna, Helen, Nancy, TerriB, Karen, RonE, and others I am forgetting right now with their help & donations to the party. Thanks also to our room 220 crew for hosting us late night. Also, props to Bill Ector & HTN on the concert program. Pure class. Bill wrote a wonderful essay in the middle on Derek and Susan. I told Willie he was going to have a great 2008...not the way he would have chosen to start it out but he's going to have a good one in the end. I wish I had 5% of his positive spirit. Count me in for next year!
