I just got back from seeing Col. Bruce and the Quark Alliance at Smith's Olde Bar and I had a terrific time. Tonight was their CD release party and it was -- in fact -- the very first day the CD was available! It's titled, "Give Thanks to Chank," and Chank was up from Macon for the occasion. It was great to see Chank, as always, and I was reminded of the album's subtitle, "His attitude is gratitude."
Chank said he didn't make it to the H&H for Oprah, but he heard all about it from John Griffin, who told him Mama Louise was delighted with the visit.
Also at the show tonight were music photographer Unknown Vincent, Rev. Jeff Mosier and his brother Johnny of Blueground Undergrass, writer and biographer Scott Freeman, and the legendary Joe Zambi, the inspiration of dozens.
Bruce has always had the gift of attracting world-class musicians to play with him and the Quark Alliance is no exception. Some folks have said this is Bruce's best band since the ARU, but I'm not ready to make a call yet -- just let me say that I'm really happy with the Colonel's newest band.
Opening for the Colonel tonight was the Ede Wright Music Montage, a kick-butt jazz trio. Ede [that's pronounced like "Eddie"] is a very tall black dude who wails on his PRS guitar -- I was quite impressed.
As I type this, I'm giving "Give Thanks to Chank" my first listen, and it really rocks -- look for an album review in Hittin' the Note issue #56 in early 2008. You may recall a song called "Hampmotized" from Susan Tedeschi's album "Wait for Me," and turnabout is fair play -- track four of "Give Thanks to Chank" is a song called, "Susan T" -- and it might be my favorite song on the album!
I love the Colonel and his friendship over the years has truly enriched my life -- ah, the stories I could tell ... just wait until you see the movie!
