In a nutshell, John Moreland is a singer songwriter from Oklahoma, who was completely unknown to me until a few short weeks ago. I discovered him on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. It was his national television debut.
The song he performed that night, Break My Heart Sweetly (included here) just totally blew me away.
He so moved me that within a week I owned his albums In The Throes (2013) and High On Tulsa Heat. (2015) .
To me, he sounds like his two main influences are Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt with maybe a touch of Jason Isbell and Nebraska era Bruce Springsteen thrown into the mix.
And, these are not happy songs. Like Townes, his songs speak with a palatable sense of sadness and world weariness over love lost, love unrequited, loneliness and isolation.
From what I've read from folks who have seen him, you can here a pin drop during his set, as his songs completely grab and hold his audience live. I've also read from those same folks that he really gave Jason Isbell a run for his money when he opened for him on his latest tour, no mean feat as I love Jason and I think that he is currently absolutely on the top of his game.
