Grateful..Dead..1969-03-01
Early and Late shows
Fillmore West
San Francisco

"The American version of the Japanese film 'Magnificent Seven' The Grateful Dead"

-Bill Graham intro (actually 'The Magnificent Seven' was the American version of the Japanese film 'The Seven Samurai', but either way it's still the Grateful Dead!)

unofficial pre-release version, sounds great, not as polished as official, but you won't care. Found on Lossless Legs, they are careful not to tread on toes of official vault productions. (Still, threw the dots in just in case the Dead mafia run a search and send an LSD drone to spike me in my sleep.)

2 cd WAV . . . to keep sets complete, last two tracks of show, 6 min of noise and banter and 7 minute-ish Hey Jude are included at the end of disc 1, which is a short set. Otherwise would have had to break up Set 2, or have encore alone on a 3rd disc : p

SBD, clean, fat

For me this is THE definitive 1968-69 Grateful Dead show. From the same Fillmore run as the "Live Dead" album. By far best sounding Anthem of the Sun - Aoxomoxoa recording I have heard yet. First 33 min is solid Anthem of the Sun. Dark Star is stellar. Great stage banter. Band streamlined, Garcia on point, in tune, not the ballsout chaos of other shows of this time (not the maniacal screaming on St. Stephen and that which makes 1969 a rare visit for me) multilayered Anthem of the Sun vox in tune, guitars in tune, sound intimate, compressed . . . this show is flat out tight.

This one is for the tigers. Kittens stay away. The Holy Grail runneth over with electric kool-aid.

Now, I am probably in error here, but heard some acoustic bass, and acoustic guitar on Mountains of the Moon that sounded mysteriously like Pentangle. John Renbourn and Danny Thompson, to be precise. Turns out Pentangle was on the bill. Got me wondering if Pentangle raised the bar to where the Dead made it a more strict musical evening.

This is one of those moments where I am really regretting having been born too late to attend and born too early to have a time machine. Pentangle and the Dead on the same bill. . .

Agreed! This has been in constant rotation since I found it. Luckily this one is still out there in bootlegland, the whole run is an official release now, over a thousand bucks box set, . These Dead boxes are probably the best investment on the planet, they skyrocket in price in a few years, it's sick!

Am kicking myself for not grabbing the first May 77 box, it is going for 700$ and up now. Way out of reach. Got the recent 77 box with Cornell, sounds incredible. Can't have everything I guess.

Will pony express this one Wednesday-ish.
