boombox's notes may 2016:

Near capacity crowd at a venue that has seen more name changes than Spinal Tap had drummers. Due to a strict 10pm curfew, we only got one set, so lost one of Matt's always entertaining drum solos, which was a great pity, and also probably 3-4 songs. It was the first time the band had been to Bristol and here's hoping other bands of their ilk will follow - the crowd loved it and would have them back anytime, even if they had to come on at 6.30pm. The set was the usual mix of own material from 20 years worth of albums - personal highlights included 'Child of the Earth' and 'Game Face' (complete with a bit of Donovan thrown in) , mixed with some choice covers: as a Marriott fan, how could I not enjoy the set closing medley?

Knowing that Bristol audiences tend to be amongst the most ignorant anywhere in the UK, with too many chatters by far, I chose not to record from the floor. I tried half way up the stairs to the balcony in front of the suspended stack and it paid off - minimal crowd intrusions and even if there were two Epsilon semi-morons behind me, their yabber doesn't intrude more than very occasionally. I manually reduced about half a dozen loud handclaps and used the absolute tiniest bit of compression to compensate for a couple of Warren's vocal peaks and that's it, apart from fades at the beginning and end. Sound is very direct and depending on your system, you may wish to EQ to taste, but I leave that to you. As always, my master files are available to anyone who wants to remaster or use them as part of a matrix project.
