Among the various high-water marks of HOFers, few matched Walker’s in 1997 - .366 BA, 49 HR, 130 RBI, And 33 SB - he had 2-3 other comparable seasons as well, altho not with as many SBs - was right imho that they didn’t use where he played as a criteria - or maybe they considered it but it wasn’t enough of a factor - it’s all good
Hadn’t heard about the new playoff arrangement they’re considering - sounds wacky alright
It seems bush league to me that seven Hou players have been HBPs over the last 5 games
But as a stathead, looked up some info re Walker vs others’ benchmark seasons of his era
Barry Bonds
.301, 33 HR, 114 RBI, 52 SB in 1990
.328, 73 HR, 137 RBI in 2001
.362, 45 HR, 101 RBI in 2004
David Ortiz
.332, 35 HR, 117 RBI in 2007
.315, 38 HR, 127 RBI in final season of 2016
Alex Rodriguez
.310, 42 HR, 111 RBI, 46 SB in 1998
.358, 36 HR, 123 RBI in 1996
.314, 54 HR, 156 RBI in 2007
Of course these #s could be tossed around/interpreted every which-way - but was surprised to see how prolific Larry Walker was
W/ a new roster at Comiskey & new manager David Ross at Wrigley, could be a good summer in Windy City - Ross was real big for us in 2013
be prepared for disappointment tho, BoSox will surprise people w/how well they do this season 😛

Made it to Mets-Marlins game yesterday in Jupiter FL. Jeter and Mattingly in the house. Beautiful day for my first baseball of the season.
Getting stoked for the season. Less than two weeks to go! Always a cold start here in the Midwest. They should play the first couple of weeks in Mexico or something. Hopefully Wrigley isn't too bad!

The Mariners are moving March games outside of Seattle due to corona virus. Obviously public health comes before baseball, but if more teams are forced to do this, the season is going to get really complicated. The NBA has already been discussing closed arenas, broadcast only.

UPDATE: NCAA Tourneys will play to empty arenas. Taking the college crowd out of the most exciting sporting event of the year is a bummer (and a huge economic loss). But considering the massive amount of domestic travel the tourney involves, this actually makes a lot of sense.

So I just bet my buddy. He said the season won't start until August first. I took the under on that. I asked him what he thought the point would even be by then to have a season.

If MLB can't get back by July, which means things would have to be clear in June, there's no way the season happens at all. Hopefully, for all other kinds of reasons obviously, it plays out that way.
They were able to play seasons in 1981 & 1995. For very different reasons obviously but they did it. Let's hope!

I am going to Opening Day somewhere.

May not be til 2021 tho 😮 - maybe this year, who knows
Maybe they could begin the season later this summer playing at empty stadiums to make sure - at the same time installing hand washing stations & face mask dispensaries -
then start allowing fans, adhering initially to 6 feet apart social distancing, so it’d be about 16,000 or so at Fenway
....then, hopefully the full return to normalcy for 2021
What’s the new normal anyway 😮 :wtf:
Did anyone read Scott Boras' thoughts on chances of playing the season? I can't really stand the guy but I have to give him credit for thinking outside the box. A World Series game on Christmas Day? Hmm...

Wow, Even ESPN has resorted to showing movies. 🙁

“On This Day”
in 1939, Fred Goldsmith dies bitterly, clutching an 1870 newspaper clipping of his demonstration of the curveball. He claimed to be the pitch’s inventor, but the accepted opinion was that it was Candy Cummings
RIP, Jim “The Toy Cannon” Wynn
One of the great nicknames - like the late great Kirby Puckett who came later, diminutive stature but not power
Generally accepted that the longest HR ever hit at the cavernous Astrodome, was by Jimmy Wynn (he was Jim on my b-ball card)
April 12, 1970 - a Phil Niekro knuckler doesn’t knuckle, & “Wynn sent the pitch more than 500 feet down the left field line, the first player to hit one into the upper deck of the Astrodome”
Just read an article about a Red Sox / Astros cheating lawsuit being dismissed. I found the reasoning odd:

The youngest player to lead the league in ...BA I think? His rookie year was 1955 - trivia sticks with me (hope I’m right 😮 )
Sad day indeed for Detroit fans & all of baseball - career Tiger, unquestionably an all time great
RIP, Al Kaline
Batting average is correct. Off the top of my head I want to say it was in 1954 and he was only 20. Growing up in the Detroit area I met him several times. Great guy. Never played in the minor leagues. Wonderful ambassador for the Tigers and MLB.

RIP Mr Kaline, a classic Hall Of Famer and person. I make 4 hour trips to the hall of fame because of players and people like him. Class and Baseball all the way. God Bless

Man, just when you thought the baseball season couldn't get any worse this happens. Kaline and Harwell, two of the classiest guys to ever grace Detroit. No one can ever replace them.
If or when the season begins, I’ll be rooting for top Tiger Miguel Cabrera (11 years) to have the same kind of season w/the end of his career near (turns 37 next week), that Al did near the end of his, at the same age - .313 BA in 1972
You had that right Lee, it was 1954
*later edit - he was a 2nd year player when he won that BA in 1955 - rookie year, 1954 - I always thought he was a rookie when he set that record

to High School. I finally had to upgrade but man did i love that thing. RIP Al Kaline
Just watched A League of Their Own. One of my favorite baseball movies ever.

Did anyone see this?
I did a LOL when I read it.

So recently I've watched A League of Their Own as I mentioned, The Natural (never liked that movie but there a lot of good actors in it), Bull Durham, The Jackie Robinson Story, The Sandlot, Little Big League (I love that movie) and a few documentaries on the 1968 & 1984 Tigers.
I want to see Fear Strikes Out with Anthony Perkins & Karl Malden. Need to find that one. Would also like to watch Major League for the millionth time. I could recite the entire script.

A day late, but guess I’ll mention - April 20, 1912 - when it all began
In 11 innings, the Sox beat the Yankees 7-6 in the first game at Fenway Park
Was a great deal of excitement, but the opening of the new ballpark took a back seat as shock waves hit both sides of the Atlantic as word gradually reached shore that 5 days b4, the supposedly unsinkable Titanic had gone to the bottom on her maiden voyage - chitchat among fans at the brand new state of the art stadium was as much about the emerging details of the wreck from survivors, who had reached NY 2 days b4 on the rescue ship Carpathia, as it was on the ballgame
ChiSox fans certainly know this date tho (April 21)
Philip Humber
In 2012, his first-ever complete game is a perfecto, 27 up, 27 down in a 4-0 win over Seattle

J.T Watkins. Poor video operator for the Red Sox gets punished but nobody else. I read the guy made $70k a year and he was the punishment. Kind of doubt he was in charge of whatever they did.

I was looking at some stuff the other day and I saw the election year for the HOF. I got to thinking about the best class ever inducted. I don't think anything could be better than the first in 1936: Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth.
I didn't look it up but I think the best after that I can recall was 1999: George Brett, Nolan Ryan, Robin Yount.
Are there some comparable ones?
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.
Yes hard to top that first class - Cy Young, Connie Mack, Christy Mathewson (posthumously) as well (didn’t google;)
......Johnny Bench & Yaz In 1989 - surely others
