I get the history of regionally identifying viruses, but I don't really think calling it "Chinese Virus" tells us much about the virus since there are other viruses originating from the same region. It's not just a PC thing, but people who insist on being able to call it that when it has a very public name are probably not the type of person I'm going to bother defending. If anything, calling it "Wuhan" virus is more appropriate.

I'm all for shaming China for these markets - rhinos and pangolins and a number of other animals are becoming endangered because of it. They're as shameful as whale and shark hunting - well, more so since they've now lead to so many virus-related deaths.

Thought this was more interesting...

I like Bill Maher, but the scientists who have labeled viruses from their regions of origin in the past, were doing so in an attempt be helpful and productive, and to organize - scientists didn't do that in an attempt to shame. Judging from what we've seen and know about Trump, we know why he has called it the China virus, and it wasn't to be helpful and productive, that's for sure. So, if one's only goal is to shame at a time like this, then you are part of the problem, and a loser.

If you want to call it a specific name, call it Wubatcrapflu.

Lots of viruses come from China, so it makes no sense to call any particular virus China Virus. If you want to call it the Wuhan Virus, be my guest. But if Trump and Bill Maher want to call it the Chinese Virus or China, they can do it alone and look stupid while doing it.

Maybe so, but how many have brought the world to its knees?

so it makes no sense to call any particular virus China Virus.

Is it not believed that this particular virus started in wet markets in ....China?

It amazes me that people continue to defend a Communist, totalitarian regime that has more than likely lied to the world and its own people.

It also amazes me that many do not look upon China as an enemy of the United States anymore. At least their government. I'm 47 years old and I was raised in a time where Russia and China were the bad guys. Guess what? They still are but cheap labor/consumer products have blinded so many to that fact.

On a daily basis, China wages economic war on our country and markets. This COVID outbreak is just the latest example. they deserve the world's scorn right now and my hope for all of this is that we and other Western nations start detoxing from our China addiction and start producing more at home. Bring back manufacturing big time.

Well, corona means "crown". How about "The Royal Virus"? "The King Virus"? "Your Highness Virus"? Anything but China. Don't want to offend their government and their stinkin', filthy, disease infested wet markets,

Yep ... a personality disordered narcissist personalizing something ... imagine that!

Trump's celebrationS (plural ... now, more than once) of his TV ratings built on a stunning national tragedy ... and the bodies of sick and dead Americans ... is the MOST repugnant thing I have witnessed from a President of the United States in a fairly long life that has encompassed twelve presidencies.

I doubt that ANY of us can imagine George W. Bush, amidst the horror of 9/11 and upon hearing his approval went to 90%+ being caught on a live mic saying, "Am I doing an awesome job or what! The American people LOVE me more than ANY other president EVER!"

But, with Donald Trump such bragging, self-congratulatory, sickening behavior is typical. Sure ... we have most cases of Covid-19 and deaths in the world ... but BE HAPPY. ... There's GREAT NEWS. Donald Trump is a TV RATINGS HIT!

If someone owns a Rottweiler and that Rottweiler escapes that persons fenced-in yard and chews up a neighbor's two-year old ... does the owner of the Rottweiler bear any responsibility?

Nothing wrong with venting under pressure, ok let's have a good China-bash and accuse people of defending China, when we all know full well that China sucks.

It is kind of like cursing the car when I break a bolt and bust a knuckle. Ultimately pointless, and a waste of energy at a time when we have much more immediate concerns.

That's true...so I wrote a little ditty.

Hi, my name is Cyrus
And yes I have the virus
Affectionately known as Corona
I know, it sounds royal
Hence I remain loyal
To China as I take their boner

😛

sounds like the words of someone who grew up with being scorned all the time.

Myself scorned all the time? No, not that I can ever recall. Oh wait, there was one ex of mine...

I just don't like legitimizing communist totalitarian human rights abuser regimes so that I can buy a cheap toy for my dog but you're right. Perhaps not the world's scorn. Just mine. Plenty of people who are perfectly ok with turning a blind eye.

The problem is how people are acting out to Chinese Americans. From Ted Liu's twitter account

“A woman punched a young Asian woman in the subway, possibly dislocating her jaw.”

“A man spat on an Asian man waiting for the subway.”

“The photo of the Burmese-American boy in the hospital was released. The stitches are deep and wide ....”

There was a time we lived with "sticks and stones can break my bones....etc" but this is different. Innocent people here that have nothing to do with a wet market in China are being attacked...so to continue down this road means more innocent will be hurt because of naming something by a race

So no Chinese virus but it's ok to say Wuhan virus or do we have to PC name every virus from here on out so as to not offend?

The behaviors above are nothing short of abominable, no excuse for violence. If you are among those that can not differentiate violence and opinion......that is extremely sad.

It was given a name COVID-19...so what is wrong with that. It's another Corona virus EOS...

The problem isn't that it can be consider offensive or it offends someone. It's the fact people then target innocent people because of branding something based on a race and physically attack them. The virus doesn't have a race its a corona virus...it's a separate life form. It's not human and it's not Chinese

So blame the USA corporations for running off to China for their slave labor

No, the "blame" stays here and is reinforced through the power of the almighty dollar. We have the power to not purchase items produced in China.

You can drive less to limit pollutants
You can recycle
Don't litter
Vote
etc.

We have the means to change our surroundings

And "wet" markets?...Does the Chinese Gov't have the power to shut these down in the name of Humanity?

I'm sure they do but what can we do about that...naming it after a race isn't going to change what happened

There is also a bird flu coming out of South Carolina from farms...and there is a population in this country that eats road kill...and other "game" animals then deer, elk or boar. Who know's what that might breed in the future. Who can say someone here doesn't eat bats

Fun fact:

The first known case of "Spanish Flu" was in the US. It wasn't called "Spanish Flu" until after US soldiers exported it to Europe.

https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-cases-reported-in-deadly-influenza-epidemic

In Bill Maher's bit, that is the ONLY labeling of a disease with a country name, and it is incorrect. The origin of Spanish Flu is suspected to be China, the US, or possibly France, but certainly not Spain.

The rest of Maher's case is viruses that are named after local or regional geography. We don't call Lyme Disease "USA Disease", or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever "American Fever".

So nickname it China Virus if it makes you feel better. It doesn't change anything. I think a local name "Wuhan Virus" works - or better yet learn some basics.

Coronaviruses, are called "corona" because of a crownlike feature, not because the Liberals are trying to defend China. The only thing "royal" about it is it is a royal pain in the ass.

Might as well learn about it and stop arguing over what countries to call them - there are a lot of coronaviruses, and there will be more.

Here's a little more detailed information on the Pandemic of 1918:
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/journal-plague-year-180965222/

Many stories in south Georgia relate how whole family groups died because they took in a returning soldier for the night while he was walking home from the train depot.
Around Ashburn a family found a returnee walking the road. His family lived a few miles down the road and they offered him a ride as far as they went in his direction.
They stopped along the way to say hey and tell neighbors about the returning hero.
Next day, several kids who had met up with the wagon to tell him welcome home were found dead. Each day more and more were found dead at home. One man was found on the road with a note in his pocket to the local doctor describing how sick the family was. The rest of the family was found dead.
In Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery, just outside Ashburn there are graves with multiple names and birth dates on them, showing all died the same day.

The same scenario played out in many small towns, villages, communities across the US just because the Federal Government didn't want the severity of the virus to be known to the public.

And a big Whipping Post welcome to CaboChris, lemme guess, Cabo San Lucas? Your US$ goes a long way there, no?

Yet another noob registers then a few pretend music posts, then straight to Whipping Post. Seems to be a lot of that these days.

Am I being disrespectful to anyone here? Do I need to prove my ABB love card before I'm able to talk about other issues besides the music? Brothers & Sister is my favorite ABB album. Come and Go Blues is my favorite ABB song. Oncoming Traffic and Multi-Colored Lady are my favorite Gregg solo songs. I've literally obsessed over this band for 3 years now since the passing of Gregg. Is that better? I talk about the music when the mood hits me but real life and the issues of the day interest me much more. Thanks for the welcome!
