Early versions of Mountain Jam (e.g. the May 4, 1969 recording at Piedmont Park) don't feature the "will the circle be unbroken" melody that we all know and love from Eat a Peach.

When did "Will the Circle be Unbroken" first appear in MJ?

The ABB are reputed to have played Mountain Jam with the Dead on May 10 in Atlanta and segued into Circle, although I can't find a recording. Could this have been the first?

It was certainly included by the Atlanta Pop Festival on July 5, 1970.

Are there any earlier recordings of MJ that include "will the circle be unbroken"?

Any ideas?

March 13, 1970 is the earliest version I know of based on available shows in circulation. I don't recall WTCBU as part of Mtn. Jam at the Fillmore East in February 1970.

Thanks Tori! WTCBU was not played at FE in Feb 1970, I just listed to check!
