We Three was the name Jaimoe, Chuck Leavell, and Lamar Williams called themselves as they rehearsed together during the Win, Lose, or Draw tour in 1975. When the Allman Brothers Band broke up in 1976, Jimmy Nalls joined forces with We Three as Sea Level. This cut is pre-Nalls, recorded in 1976 and given away with Hittin' the Note magazine. "Left Turn" is credited to Chuck Leavell (Classic Ivory Music, 2004 BMI)

Nice jazzy piece. It was fun listening to it. We Three was formed because Chuck, Lamar and Jaimoe were bored and wanted to play as the sessions for Win, Loose or Draw grounded to a halt for weeks at a time. Many canceled sessions because Gregg wasn't interested and sometimes Dickey wouldn't show up too.

I remember reading about We Three in print I believe was in 1975 during the Win Loose or Draw sessions. Gregg Allman and Cher was being reported in lots of tabloids. You saw their picture on every tabloid for sale in the grocery store and news stand.

Chuck, Lamar and Jaimoe were at the studio often taking a big interest in recording the follow-up to the hugely successful Brothers and Sisters but after getting one track completed, Gregg took off to the west coast and Cher and continually missed scheduled recording sessions.

Dickey stopped coming because Gregg was AWOL and Butch quit coming and was quoted in the press " You can't depend on Gregg Allman for a thing".

Dickey showed up one night when Butch and Jaimoe were gone but Chuck and Lamar were at the Capricorn studio and recorded Louisiana Lou and Sweet Mama with Bill Stewart and Johnny Sandlin on drums.

Phil Walden eventually got Gregg's promise to finish the album providing Johnny Sandlin bring the master tapes to Los Angeles and a studio there. Except for one track Gregg was added to the tracks he does appear on from sessions at a Los Angeles studio.

Johnny Sandlin later admitted the album was so difficult to record and took much longer than expected and he couldn't get the band in the studio in Macon together and it resulted in an album which was uneven and generally regarded as a disappointing follow up to Brothers and Sisters which was the best selling album the band ever had and that remains a fact to this day.

I hear a 1970s Herbie Hancock influence, which tracks since Chuck references Herbie's "Fat Mama" during "Mountain Jam" from 1973. Sea Level was a pretty sweet band.

I spun Sea Level's debut recently for the first time in ages. What a wonderful record.

@detterm I had an opportunity to speak with Chuck in a club in North Carolina where Sea Level was playing just before that album was released.

Jaimoe still had an Allman Brothers Band mushroom sticker on his floor Tom.

I asked Chuck about the break up of the Allman Brothers Band just a few months earlier and Chuck blamed it on Gregg but said just after the band became the top band in America with a number 1 album, they began to fall apart for several reasons. One was Gregg's solo tours and his lack of interest in the ABB coupled with all the drama with his tabloid rich relationship with Cher.

I asked Chuck what the other guys were going to do and he said Dickey was putting a band together with the same configuration as the original Allman Brothers. And Butch wanted to be in Sea Level and they did a club tour with Butch but Chuck said he liked it better when it was just the four of them and just Jaimoe on drums. So Chuck didn't know what Butch would do now. I remember reading Butch put together a band called Trucks in 1977 but I never heard it play and can't remember who was in Trucks.

Oddly when the second Sea Level album came out Chuck had added more players and replaced Jaimoe on drums with George Weaver. Jaimoe was given the job of a percussionist playing congas etc but he was only on a few tracks of the second album.

Then I read Jaimoe had resigned from Sea Level. A bit later I read Dickey and Gregg were buddies again and had invited Jaimoe and Butch to join a new Allman Brothers Band lineup.

Phil Walden talked Chuck and Lamar into playing a set with the Allman Brothers at a 1978 show in Macon which also featured the version of Sea Level with 6 members rather 4  but Chuck and Lamar declined to join the ABB redux after the first set so the second set had Dan Toler and David Goldflies playing with Gregg, Dickey, Butch and Jaimoe.

I've been around this site long enough to have been a recipient of the We Three cd. Still have it in my collection.

Here's yet another incarnation, BHLT.  What a shame that this band never did anything commercially.  Lots more stuff on YouTube if you care.

There was also a lot of drug related court room drama within the band.  Some members swore they would never play with other members again.
