Thanks for posting this. Always nice seeing Derek and Warren on stage together. They are uniquely qualified to carry on this music. Nice solo by Susan too.

Really enjoyed that. I like that they restored the change up right before Derek's solo. The Allman Bothers took that out after Duane died and Chuck joined. Chuck always did a rocking piano solo on that song when the Brothers and Sisters lineup was together.

Of course the best version is on At Fillmore East. Gregg's singing is so soulful and perfect. Duane's tone and how he holds his slide notes in places is the high water mark for blues slide playing and Derek channels Duane's style perfectly. Derek has often said Duane Allman is his biggest influence and Fillmore is his favorite album.

How Dickey holds at note on the beat and finally comes off it on the beat, his tone and vibrato is letter perfect and Warren and Susan are channeling what Dickey did in 1971. Ace Doucette's harp solo and Butch Trucks on drums fill out the Fillmore version plus Jaimoe on timbales. The Fillmore version is a 10+ and the best version I've heard. Hats off to TTB and Warren for coming close and paying homage to the way the original lineup played it.

Part of the beauty of The Brother's were the Blues interpretations they mastered. Whether it was 1969 or 2014 their Blues arrangements were incredibly tight and to the point. I used to marvel at the subtle nuances and the quick twists and turns in Done Somebody Wrong and Trouble No More . The choice of 'Book ending ' ( As Butch described it from the stage on closing night) their 45 year Championship run with Trouble No More was so appropriate . Of course they just killed it one more time .

I know he is kidding because Warren Haynes doesn't equal Gregg Allman on vocals and Derek, Warren and Susan are borrowing Duane and Dickey's licks and NOT coming up with styles and licks of their own. The arrangement follows exactly the ABB arrangement on Fillmore East. The bass is not Berry Oakley and the drums are not Butch and Jaimoe. And I'm certain Derek Trucks would laugh if someone told him this version topped the Fillmore version.

The Allman Brothers Band At Fillmore East is the best live rock and roll album in the history of the world. And has sold over 2 million copies. The last lineup's One Way Out recorded live at the Beacon Theater is not in the same league with Fillmore East and sold a little over 30,000 copies.

Agreed and it is certainly the one most fans immediately identify with. The beginning gave me goosebumps, Derek was channeling Duane's energy for sure, I mean that was hauntingly similar.....Couple of other points here (and thanks for posting this) After listening to that, how anyone could argue that Warren should have played slide while Derek was in the Brothers, well... And two, Susan should just sing, her lead playing has not progressed at all and still sounds like a kid practicing in a garage....

Totally disagree. I've been to many TTB shows and Susan plays some tasty, dirty licks. She's always had more of a Texas blues approach than the ABB guitarists and definitely sounds better on a Fender than a Gibson:

HA! I too, was kidding, because I knew this exact post was coming. It's like Candyman, yet not as terrifying. All you have to do is slightly mention a later version of the band's strength and you appear like a genie to make this point, yet again. It's kind of like a game at this point.

I remember being so disappointed when I heard about Jack Pearson deciding to quit the band. As hot as the band was in 1989 through 1993, things were beginning to get a little sloppy and uninspired at some of the shows even though Where It All Begins was a fine album and went gold (500,000 plus sold). The word going around was the original members had begun to not get along except Jaimoe and Dickey was drinking too much and being a bully. When Jack and Otiel joined after Warren and Allen decided to leave ( Dickey pulled a knife on Allen so he and Warren decided to move on and also because the band had stopped recording ) and I thought Jack and Otiel breathed new life in the band. Dickey and Gregg were really hitting the note at the Jack shows I saw. But Jack quit.

Then I read online Butch Trucks saying Dickey called him and asked if he thought Derek was ready. Dickey said Derek had Duane's slide style down rather well. Butch said he told Dickey Derek does use a pick so Butch wasn't sure how Derek would do on none slide parts. In no time it was announced Derek was in the band. I saw them in Las Vegas and Dickey was playing an old Strat and really bringing it with his very melodic and unique style. Blue Sky reminded me of Duane and Dickey years before more than anything I had ever seen. Ramblin' Man was even fresh and played the best in years. But Dickey began to back slide and his lifestyle really began to mess with his playing and attitude except Derek said he was always very nice and decent to him. And Derek said he thought Dickey played his ass off at the Beacon in 2000 and it was very special to him to play those songs with Dickey while he Derek was in Duane's chair because Duane was his biggest influence and Fillmore was his favorite album. We all know Butch Trucks was so tired of Dickey's attitude and demanding his way on everything and the drinking and violence that Butch talked Gregg into sending Dickey the fax so we don't need to go over all that. And we know that Gregg said if Warren hadn't come back he was going to shelve the band as Dickey played with Duane and Derek and Warren played with Dickey and Gregg was opposed to a guitar player not in that line. Gregg failed to mention Dan Toler and Jack Pearson but I understand what he was saying.

So yes after all that I agree Derek Trucks is as good as any guitarist in the ABB. Maybe not as melodic and creative as Dickey and maybe not the energy of Duane but yes he was an extension of the legacy of the ABB and cares very much about doing it how the original lineup played. Butch and Jainoe said after Duane died, there was an energy and creative force that died too and it was never there again. Jaimoe even claimed he left his body sometimes playing with Duane. Could have been the drugs:)

It was Warren and Derek who tried several times to get Dickey back on stage with the band. I think part of the reason Dickey didn't do it is I don't think he could play on that level night after night like he did with Duane and later Warren and Derek themselves. I recently watched that 1986 show when the ABB didn't have a regular bass player on YouTube. Dickey Betts is excellent throughout.

Yes I am convinced the original band is the high water mark for the ABB but I am very fond of Derek and Warren and they are two of the finest musicians to be in the band. Especially Derek. Derek is very special. Hell he may be Duane reincarnated:)
