Tim is the bass player.
Who sat in for 4 or so songs? I don't think Susan introduced him and if she did I missed it.
Tim is the bassist who ultimately replaced Oteil in the band. He played on the 3rd record (variety of guests filled the role on the second). He played on Bowie's final album so he's a high regarded player who looks like he gets good gigs.

And with a pretty steady run of shows starting mid January through end of April. Man they are going to have to scramble. Not sure who they will bring in. They have had a few bass players over the years. I liked Tim’s playing and seemed like a good fit. All the best in his future endeavors.

I'm curious if anyone has an educated guess what a really good bass player in 2018 bass player makes a year?
Maybe we see more turnover in bands today because income is more limited than 20 years ago because the music business has changed?
I'm also assuming there is more turnover in touring bands today. I have no facts to back that up other than what I keep seeing in many bands that I follow.

I really don't know why you would think there is more turnover today. There are hardly any bands in history without lineup changes. It is the norm and the exception are those very few bands without changes. And I mean few.
Allow me to suggest after eight years the TTB has had a small amount of turnover. Two horn players and now, two bass players. From what little I am aware of, Derek and Susan treat their band members pretty much like family. They have created an environment that is conducive the retaining personnel for an extended basis. Having spoken to both many times I can only suggest they are very nice people and not hung up on the rock & roll star nonsense. That, to me, seems to be why they have maintained their band and crew as well as they have.
was there Friday and Saurday (great shows, listened to Thursday on the arcive which was also great) and was wondering about that after seeing the other bass player rotate in. I googled him and saw that he has played a bit with Kebbe so wasn't sure if he was sitting in for fun or if in fact they were "breaking him in".

How's that old adage go? Nobody's irreplaceable.
I remember thinking the TTB was gonna take a big hit when Oteil left but alas Tim stepped right in and was a great fit and helped continue the band's rise.
I'd be stunned if the same thing doesn't occur this time around. It's an even more attractive gig than ever before, imo.

i'm sure the second the musician community knew Tim was leaving (who derek loved), that derek's phone was lighting up with people wanting the gig. i'm sure that this is a temporary loss for them, but their network is so huge and talented that it is probably just a part of the process.
i saw the show with george porter jr. wow. while they probably won't rotate again, man i'd love to see porter sit in again.
I'd love to see George in the TTB permanently! He is a monster player who besides being an originator of New Orleans funk with the Meters, has played on countless recordings by others that you are probably unaware of. I was hoping Warren would give him the Mule gig that ended up going to Andy Hess. I assumed George was just having fun with the Mule gigs and helping Warren out, but when I posted a message on the Funky Meters site stating such, George actually responded saying if the spot was offered to him, he'd take it.
Most of my favorite all time bands from the late '60s and '70s changed members regularly. Its part of why most times when a band is nominated for the RnR Hall of Fame, there is a debate about who should be inducted with the band.

You might want to read what I posted again. I used assume & no proof. I was simply speculating.
Haven't seen any mention of Todd Smallie, did he depart on good terms?
If it's true it would not surprise me, he is an incredibly talented musician who would inevitably look for another outlet, TTB pays the bills, but they aren't playing HIS tunes. I was surprised when he joined, and have been surprised he stayed. There is improv in TTB, but not a ton.
He has upcoming tour dates with Whose Hat.
I love TTB, some of the best live music I've ever heard, but.....I'm getting burned out on the cover tunes.
They got 12 people, and they gotta do all those covers??

They will have no problem replacing him. There are monster players out there that never get any farther than playing local bars.

They posted an official announcement I see.
Bass players along with drummers are the backbone of any band. I'm sure the group is sad to see him go, but they are such a high quality outfit, they will find a suitable replacement that will fill in that sound. They seem to find people that fit in well and have a good chemistry with the ensemble.
