The Tedeschi/Trucks Band: "Future Soul" (new record)
The new Tedeschi/Trucks Band record, Future Soul, arrived in the mail on Monday, and as is typical of good records, it continues to grow on me with repeated listens. Very much a song oriented record, with all eleven tunes clocking in between three and five minutes. And of course the performances from this tremendous twelve piece band are sterling. Future Soul is a perfect title because it's a very warm, soulful record. And one look at the liner notes will tell you that Susan and Derek continue to acknowledge the great talent in this band. I'm a Mike Mattison fan, and they do two of his tunes, including the title cut. And Mattison co-wrote four others. The title cut is the most straight hard rocking tune that I have ever heard TTB do, and a huge departure from the laid back vibe of the remainder of this record. Mattison only gets lead vocals on one tune, Under The Knife, and as usual he kills it. Susan Tedeschi of course gets the bulk of the lead vocals, and as has been the case for years, her emotional and smooth delivery continues to impress me. I just love her singing. Keyboard player Gabe Dixon also authored two tunes and co-wrote two others. Future Soul may turn out to be TTB's most popular record, and I am predicting at least a Grammy nomination, quite possibly a Grammy Award, in their future (pun intended). Category would be Best Soul Album of The Year.
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to get it. I enjoyed "I Am The Moon" and played it regularly for months.
I think it was one of four albums which were eventually released in 2022 from the big COVID lockdown sessions they had.
It a big band and an evolving band but always tight and polished and fine.
