The “real” “warm” sound of old live shows

I’ll try my best to explain this, since I lack all technical knowledge to do so accurately.

I am listening to old Peter Green Mac shows tonight. Real releases. And it struck me, as it does with so many other recordings of that era, that it sounds more like you’re in the venue than new live recordings.

Like you’re standing halfway back in the room. For lack of a better term, there’s a slight distance to the instruments and you can hear slight echo, etc. Particularly the guitar solos.

Whatever, I love that sound. Other recordings, off the top of my head, that sound like that are the Cream live recordings.

Might be audience recording versus soundboard. They both have their pros and cons.
