So sad to hear this. Even though I was a long-time New York Knicks fan and despised the Dave Cowens era Celtics, I always admired "Hondo". Great all-around ability, incredible endurance and hustle, team player and never a whiner on the court. Always did yourself proud, Hondo. R.I.P.

I was saddened by the news. My Dad was a big Celtics fan too so I was aware of the Russell teams but Havlchek was the guy who made me a lifetime fan. Those Cowens and Havlichek teams that dueled with those great Knicks teams solidified my being a fan. And by all accounts Havlichek was a very nice man. He was drafted in Cousy's last year and lasted almost until the Bird era. An all time great. RIP

One of the truly greatest of all time.
Nobody played with more heart, soul. and guts.
Loved watching him play the Knicks.
Thanks Hondo.
RIP.

Saw this on Yahoo Sports this morning and it made me sad. I hate the N.B.A. today (bores me to tears) but when I was a kid in the 70s & 80s I was a big fan. I vaguely remember him at the end of his career and what a great player and ambassador of the game he was. I don't know if he made that list of the 50 greatest players but if not, he should be.

God Rest His Soul.

I was a die hard Knicks fan in those days and despised the Celtics. Hondo IMHO is one of the greatest. As previously stated his endurance was unchallenged and his will to win was scary. I salute one of the all time greats.

I had a strange love/hate relationship with the man. Ultimate respect but also as a kid growing up in L.A. definitely a twinge of anger at how Hondo's Celtics repeatedly took my beloved Lakers out year after year in the 60's. Havlicek was definitely the kind of guy you want on your team instead of having to go up against him......as Old Dog said, an insane "will to win."

As an all time great it is easy to forget that for a long time he was a sixth man
