The Allman Brothers Band: Charleston, WV, 04-06-73

Hey Porkchopbob. Thanks for the Charleston. West Virginia show. I saw the ABB 8 times in 1973 with Nashville being a standout SMOKIN ' show.
1973 was an emotional year for me concerning the ABB. Oakley had died and it seemed the cult like status the ABB had become to me was collapsing. Duane and Berry were gone and they were the cornerstone of the band to me.
The new Allman Brothers was a different sound. But they were polished and swung like a big band of the 1940's. And Chuck Leavell took up the space left by Duane's death and in a refreshing, polished, professional way without being a guitar player. An improvement of the 5 man band IMO.
This didn't kick in like the original band and never played on the level we hear on AFE but they were good. Real good. Too bad it didn't last as that version actually became the most successful of any of their lineups.

@robertdee 1973 was a high point for the band, such a fresh sound. But yeah, it didn't last. Listening to 1975 shows, it's like a different band.

Thanks for posting @porkchop.What a way to start Tuesday morning.
This IMO is the sound of The Allman brothers that keeps me smiling.
The mix of Dicky on slide and Gregg on keys is amazing. Wish I would have been able to experience this group of musicians in person, but I wasn't old enough. That being said, getting to listen to old shows is IMO just like being there.
Turn up the speakers and sit back and enjoy...

Putting my ABB geek hat on ... this recording includes the earliest recorded live version of "Come & Go Blues"
