Steeley Dan

has anyone caught the Beacon shows yet. I am going Saturday night and was wondering how they are playing this year.

one of my friends from work saw them over the summer in Boston and said it was great

what eva show you see. if your a Dan fan you.ll enjoy.. just saw them a month or so ago always tight... and professional...........the band they assembled has been together for a while............dont eva do it with out your Fez on!!

I was there on Saturday when they did the Royal Scam album and selected hits.
Couple observations:
1) Generally its an older crowd, which is probably to be expected, and if you have upper balcony seats as I did than you can still enjoy the concert and see the band perform as you can sit. There was only one douchenozzle who would bend over as if to sit down but he would remain in this half sit/half stand pose which is actually worse than standing and yammer on endlessly to they guy next to him. Someone finally asked him to sit down and they guy got all bent out of shape. Very inconsiderate. The volume was not excessively loud either.
2. Donald Fagans voice is what it is for his age. He does a good job but they also have a very talented trio of backup singers. He is not belting out their songs. There is also a person on a grand piano on stage that has serious talent.
3. Walter Becker is so laid back and non-showmanlike that it actually can take a while to adjust to this. Its like he is cemented to the stage and doesn't even shift his feet around. I swear he just blended into the background and the spotlight was rarely on him for the entire Royal Scam album. They have assigned another guitarist with lead guitar duties and I think he is also very restrained which works because you don't want to upstage Walter .
With the horns and backup singers, there are 10 musicians on stage.
The band did not even say good evening until after their album set. In my opinion, they are way more comfortable as studio musicians than a live performance. They really picked it up in the second set post the Royal Scam and the whole performance seemed to elevate musically. They have so many great songs and you really appreciate the immense skill it takes to play these live. Although I say 1st and 2nd set, there was no break and they do a solid 2hr show of great music, but don't expect any long jams either.
The closing show is the only one that is kind of mysterious as its billed as "The most uneventful night of forgettable music" or something like this...Classic Steely Dan wit. Go check them out. You wont be disappointed.
