RIP Gary.  I saw him with Ringo Starr's All Star Band I believe that was 1998.  Brooker and Jack Bruce were the highlights when they played/sang Procol Harum and Cream tunes.  I couldn't wait for Ringo to shut up and get back behind the drums.

@robslob Wasn't Robin Trower in Procol Harum? I remember when A Whiter Shade Of Pale was a huge hit on the radio.

"Whatever you’re smoking out there smells Verrry nice"

That’s what Gary Booker (it's Booker not Brooker) or someone on the stage, said at a Procol Harum show at Boston Common summer 1971 (I think)

RIP

@robertdee

, yes, Robin Trower was a member of Procol Harum for a few years, but did not play on "Whiter Shade". According to Robin, there is no guitar track on the song. After it became a hit, they felt they needed a guitarist, and he got the call. Listen to PH tunes like "Whiskey Train", "Song for a Dreamer" and "Conquistador" to hear Robin's contributions to the band. Also, Gary's last name is BROOKER, the original poster is correct.

@meandean Yes I remember Conquistador. That was on the radio too. I got turned on to Trower about 1974 and saw some shows over the years and bought two albums. Trower was a melodic and spacy guitarist back then. Very emotional playing.

Whiter Shade of Pale has a dominant organ track I seem to remember that wouldn't leave room for a lead guitar.

Apparently it was a surprise hit and it was huge. Gary Booker will always be remembered for it.
