Yup, that's what I figured. But I gave up watching SNL decades ago (literally) when they stopped being funny to me, so I have no real idea of what's going on there any more. Humor is subjective, and tastes change. When I stopped laughing at/with them I found other things to do. I happened to find this and wanted to share it. Nothing more.

I was relieved Paul remembered being in the Beatles. This interview actually happened. I was listening. Driving between Knoxville, Tennessee and Ashville, North Carolina and a country music DJ I stumbled on was  singing and playing his own music. Then he had a guest Del Reeves come on and sing. This was followed by the DJ promoting he had arranged to interview actor James Arness star of Gunsmoke. So he gets James on the phone at his home in Brentwood, California.

I could tell the DJ suddenly was nervous. Then he said Mr. Arness I have your bio in an old movie book  and it says during World War 2 you were in the Army and came up against German sniper fire and you got shot in the right leg. DO YOU REMEMBER THAT SIR? And Matt Dillon said " I sure do. Actually if you watch me walk on Gunsmoke I favor my right leg just a little".

I'm glad Matt Dillon remembered getting shot in the leg in 1943.  Guess his mind was still sharp in 1993.

This clip is from Feb '93 ( is that almost 3 decades ago?? ).  Some of the talent from those years:

Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Julie Sweeney, Dana Carvey, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, Robert Smigel  etc.

Damn ....

For those of you interested, Bob Odenkirk was interviewed by Howard Stern to promote his new book.  he talks a lot about the tragedy of Chris Farley.  Some very interesting and touching insights.  Can't wait for the return of Saul Goodman.

@robertdee Del Reeves! That is one from the wayback file. I have a friend that played pedal steel for him for about ten years. When I was road managing Mel McDaniel, Del was a frequent co-bill and opening act. My friend described working for Del as an alcohol and amphetamine fueled swingers party on a bus. Mel and Del could empty a fifth of vodka in about 30 minutes, go out and do their show, and then repeat the process for the second show. Then after the second show, they would do some serious drinking. Thanks for the nightmares, er I mean, memories!

@mikewest I remember Mel Daniels. In 1969 I was an MC and stage manager of an old theatre in Kingsport, Tenn. Moved there to take the job after spending most of my time in New York City. What a contrast. But we got Porter Wagoner with Dolly Parton. Johnny Cash. Jerry Lee Lewis on various Saturdays. The real drunks and I MEAN DRUNKS were J. Frank Wilson and the Cavilers. And they played like drunks, threatening each other.

Listen to all the big venues Del Reeves was playing.

J. Frank at the mic in this pic died of complications of alcoholism at age 49 in 1991!

@robertdee Thanks for the memory jog. Yeah, Porter was a pill head who drank moderately, at least by measure of his acquaintances. Even Keith Richards was/is shocked by Jerry Lee's capacity for, well, everything. And I guess Mel was in the style of J. Frank Wilson. Mel never recovered from his fall off of a stage in 1996. He walked off the front of the stage and fell about 40 feet into the orchestra pit. He was so drunk that the fall didn't kill him and he tested a blood alcohol level so high that the ER doctor kept ordering retests because his level was in the lethal range. They settled on .43

@mikewest Gregg and Dickey had these same issues. So many have. Yes often you kinda play a decent show this waisted but it takes its toll and most musicians who get straight admit they didn't sound as good as they thought and some times it was embarrassing.

Wow 40 feet into a pit at a theatre!! He is lucky to have lived from that and the blood alcohol level.

Guitar great Gary Moore drank so much on vacation in Spain that he passed out in his room and was dead when the lady with him tried to arouse him.

Jerry Garcia was dead at 53. The autopsy doctor said inside his body looked like a man 83 not 53!

But I guess many times these people were having a ball. Joe Walsh always grins when he talks about those days. Always says he doesn't remember much about playing and being in the road back then but he's told he had a blast.

Walsh said a combination of Vodka, cocaine and Camel cigarettes was what he discovered allowed him to play okay yet be waisted everyday.

{snip}Even the Beatles acknowledged that if they hadn't been smoking pot at the time they recorded Rubber Soul it would have been even better. One can only wonder...

@billastro Yes that seems to be the case. The guys back then who thought pot, LSD, cocaine etc enhanced the music and made it better were apparently wrong.

Gregg Allman admitted that often. About 2016 Gregg said drugs and alcohol caused he and Dickey have some embarrassing shows. Gregg said there were times when he should have been voted off the stage too. Even Butch said Gregg was just as bad as Dickey at times. Butch said he would have them turn Gregg's organ down in the mix and do more instrumentals and Gregg was on the side of the stage and they would just not focus on Gregg. But Dickey was in the middle of the stage and did solos on everything.

TwO DriNk ta PlAy. Hic-up!!!

Relax magazine said after Covid goes away there will be a team of big men the size of Paul Anderson at each area who will come out and kick the slobber out of bands that play like that:)

BIG PAUL ANDERSON!!
