Great article. They are definitely doing Gregg proud by keeping this album's story and music alive.

This was an odd contradiction:

But then [Gregg] said, ‘Listen, I want to sing ‘Blind Bats and Swamp Rats,’ and ‘Black Muddy River.’ And we were both like, ‘Oh, shit. Okay. We’d never talked about any of that before. And then we started going through the notes Don had brought.”

...

Was also convinced Allman to try his hand the Grateful Dead’s “Black Muddy River,” one of the most reflective tunes in the venerable band’s songbook.

Thanks for posting this article, great read Grin

I've been playing Southern Blood quite a lot since I picked it up, despite the initial sadness you get when realizing that this will be his last record, the songs and music on this album are outstanding. You can tell Gregg, his band and Producer put everything they had into this.

Along with "Laid Back", this is perhaps my favorite album by Gregg; it pulls you in from the powerful opening number and doesn't let up.

My only regret is that there are not any unreleased songs that may surface later in another edition. From what I've read, this is it 🙁

Excellent read.

Good pickup about the conflicting stories behind Black Muddy River. Whatever the reason, I'm glad he did it --- it's my 2nd favorite behind True Friend.

Driving sweet rides, reefer ( who calls it that anymore? ), BBQ, playing' with dogs, etc..... Glad Gregg was able to still enjoy the simple pleasures in life all the way till the end!

What a fantastic read, I smiled and cried a few tears as I read.... I love the album and miss him realizing we'll never have another album from Gregory Lenoir Allman.

I held off getting Southern Blood for a couple months and then after I got it, it laid in the passenger seat of my car for a couple more months before I listened to it this morning finally. I didn't want to break that plastic seal on it. Once I did, it would become real for me and it's taken a long time to accept reality that he's gone. Butch too. I worshiped the Allman Brothers for a long time. I'm pretty convinced that never again in my life will I feel what I felt being up close at an Allman Brothers concert.

I'm sure some of you have had a similar moment when you finally accept that it's all over. Mine was this morning. It's a fantastic album.

As I’ve said in other posts, I really really like this record.

But for music that I like so much, I rarely listen to it, because it’ll make me sad. And it’s not just that he’s passed. It’s that fact combined with the subject matters of the songs. It’s a gut punch combo.

Someday I’ll be able to regularly play it, but at this point I think I played it a bunch the first week and I haven’t listed to it in months. Despite it being so damn good.

The Gregg song that breaks my heart is from HTN, “Old Before My Time.” Jeez. So frank.
