Meat Loaf Death

So sad. I always really liked his voice.

Very sad. I was not a big fan of his music as the "Bat Out of Hell" album was played to death on the rock stations where I lived but I did like his vocals on Ted Nugent's 1976 "Free For All" album. He sang on 5 of the tracks on that album
Short story, I had the opportunity to meet Meatloaf back the early 1980's. I was going to college and working for a lumber company, Lloyd Lumber, in Westport, CT.
Westport and surrounding towns are very wealthy communities on the ocean where many celebrities live(d) like Keith Richards, Paul Newman (RIP), Roger Daltry's inlaws etc.
One Friday night just before closing Meatloaf and his wife came in the store where I worked. While his wife was discussing kitchen renovation options with the salesperson, Meatloaf hung out at the sales counter and shot the breeze with several of us. He was huge sports fan so we talked sports, music and other general topics. He was a real down to earth guy and we got the chance to see him several times after that.

Cool story. It's nice when you meet a celebrity and the person is cool. I've had good and bad meetings.
Yeah, his passing is sad. He and Jim Steinman made some very unique music. Even if it isn't your cup of tea I think they did some good stuff.
I had no idea he did vocals on that Nugent album. I will have to get it. The only two guys I was aware of that did vocals for him were St. Holmes and Brian Howe (Bad Co.).

cool story
RIP
I'll remember him for the best audience line in Rocky Horror
"not meat loaf again"

Meatloaf was indeed a CT guy. He coached girls' softball in Redding CT (a town where Ritchie Blackmore used to hang out as well as Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash), and the kids called him Coach Loaf.
I am told he died from covid, which is awful.

Charlie Huhn (sp?) did vocals for Nugent from the late 70's to early 80's. Maybe 5 albums

Hmm, didn't know of him either. Nugent isn't actually a horrible singer. He did a little on the two Damn Yankees albums but I guess he is(was) smart enough to know he needed a lead singer.

i know this thread is about meat loaf but here is some info. originally nugent was a band of 4 guys, ted, derek, cliff davies and rob grange. on the first album derek sings most of the tunes, ted sings 1 song and part of another and cliff sings a song. after the first album became a success ted wanted to sing more songs or at least the ones they figured would be singles. this caused an argument between ted and derek about ted singing "free for all" on the second album and out goes derek and in walks meat loaf to sing the rest of the songs meant for derek. derek did return to do the tour and the next album but ted took an even bigger vocal presence singing more songs including the single "cat scratch fever". after this tour and the double live gonzo album so ended the original nugent band.
charie huhn came in to sing for a few years and left in the early 80's. charlie has been with foghat since 2000. derek returned for about 2 years. in 1984 brian howe came in for about 2 years and then left for bad company. dave amato joins here as the other singer and rhythm guitar player. in 1989 when damn yankees formed dave replaced gary richrath in reo speedwagon. in 1993 when ted was solo again after damn yankees ted made comments about getting the original nugent band back together for the bands 20th anniversary. in the end only derek returned and stayed until 1997. the great album spirit of the wild was released though in 1995 to celebrate 20 years of ted nugent solo. since 1997 ted nugent has pretty much done all the lead vocals on albums and live. derek did return for about 4 years again though in the 2010's.
