Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, & Marc Quiñones Honor Allman Brothers Band With Stripped-Down “Midnight Rider” Cover
Chris Meyer | Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

With the help of producer Tony Succar, Allman Brothers Band percussionist Marc Quiñones paid tribute to his former band and its late leader Gregg Allman with a touching rendition of “Midnight Rider”. Recruiting former ABB bandmates, guitarist Derek Trucks and Oteil Burbridge, this stripped-down trio version features the Bronx-born Quiñones on lead vocals and congas.

The song was recorded down in Florida at Unity One Studio in Miami and Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi‘s home studio in Jacksonville. Let’s hope these guys get together to bless us with some more beautiful music sooner rather than later. Check out their version of the classic Allman’s number below.

Thank you, that was a really cool tribute. I normally dislike covers of this song, but this Afro-Cuban version is excellent. And I also agree that these three gentlemen should get together again real soon for some shows! 😛

Solid work. Any time any of these guys get together, it warms my heart.

Lovely guitar, obviously, and very good vocals.

Tough song to touch because the original is so strong that I'm not sure how to compete with it or provide a viable alternative version to it, but this is really solid.

Love any time I see the ABB alumni together. Makes wish even more that those 3 + Gregg, Butch, Warren & Jaimoe had found their way to the studio sometime after 2003.....maybe after a couple of those writing sessions Gregg would host w/a bandmate at his house.....

I do dig the outtro / ending Marc put on there. Good stuff.

And Marc really lost a lot in 2017....his drum/percussion partner & bandmate of over two decades (who invited him into the ABB and Les Bres), and then his ABB & Gregg & Friends leader/boss/bandmate.

Glad he hooked up with the Doobie Bros last summer.

What did he do with The Doobies? I didn't know that.

Marc was a part of the Doobie Bros touring lineup.....along with Bill Payne on keyboards (who's been on the road with them a few years now). John Cowan from New Grass Revvial and whole host of other Americana type acts is the current bassist. Doobies are a pretty dang talented lineup these days even if it's just 3 of them from the '70s Doobies (2 originals).

Hmm. I like The Doobies. Unless Michael McDonald is with him. Can't take his voice.

John Cowan is my favorite living male vocalist. The John Cowan band (which doesn't tour often anymore) may be one of the best relatively unknown and most underrated bands out there. The Doobie Brothers have put together an amazing lineup.
