So the Trouble No More 50th Anniversary box set has a live version of Little Martha from the Beacon 3/21/05. It's marked "Explicit" on Amazon. Why would that be? I listened and wasn't offended at all.

I was sworn to secrecy, but I knew this story would get out one day.

"Little Martha" was written with lyrics and they're filthy. Just vile and disgusting and distasteful. In fact in its early incarnations it was a capella — nothing except those horrible words. Luckily Duane was persuaded to turn it into a guitar instrumental instead to highlight its sweet melody instead of all the profanity. But he never fully let go of his dream and kept the lyrics. Jaimoe got that sole copy after Duane passed and couldn't bear to part with it, but he never so much as read them. Many years went by and through a series of publishing deals and practical jokes, Warren wound up with them and he kept them when he quit the band. After he came back to the band in 2001 Derek used to ask him every night about letting him read the words because he'd grown convinced the full song needed to be heard. Warren stalled Derek by saying he'd only show him the words if he guessed the number between 1 and 10 Warren was thinking of — knowing that Derek would always pick "7." But in March 2005 Warren messed up and picked 7. He reluctantly handed Derek the lyrics and the two of them played Little Martha that very night at the Beacon. Derek sang the words and it was so sick that people cried and booed and covered their ears into their $12 beer cups. Derek's mic was cut in the middle of the song but the damage was done. Afterward he and Warren agreed that no one should ever hear it, so the recordings weren't made available. Derek's vocals have of course been mixed out of the "Trouble No More" version, but it's labeled explicit just to be on the safe side.

I used to curse when I frequently answered my "door-bell" while listening to Little Martha.
