Kanye West: Once An Ass, Always An Ass

I had the pleasure of being at the 12/12/12 concert at MSG. I also had a bootleg copy of the artist schedule. Everyone kept their set withing 3 - 4 minutes of the alloted time. Kanye went over by 30 minutes. Anyone familiar with the LIRR knows after midnight the trains are slim pickings. 'The a-hole cost thousands of us an hour or more of sleep.

if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us," West told E! after Sunday night’s ceremony. "We ain’t gonna play with them no more
Dear Kanye
You are correct, we don't respect you.
You have my permission to stop whatever it is that you do.
Thank you in advance

And take your equally talented spouse with you!

In the spirit of fairness, I just listened to both albums.
I can't believe I stayed awake through both. Both sleep-inducing in their own style. YAWN

People put up with Kanye because he is hot right now and makes many of them a lot of money so he has power. Once he stops making them money nobody will want to know the aholes name.
IMHO it is the same in every entertainment industry. Hollywood, sports etc. Once you are not the flavor of the month anymore and can't make them money you get kicked to the curb.

I've tried to listen to Kanye's music. It didn't grab me.

We're at a place in history where the bar is at an all time low
We've applauded mediocrity till there is no lower we can go
Art has no place in this world of supersize
Follow the leader to the latest pile of shit
Like flies
W.H.

I can't believe how boring both the Beck and Beyonce albums are.
Figured out why Beck won...read a bunch of the reivews and it's one of those albums where it's brilliant because the critics decided it was brilliant.

somebody gave me Beck's album as a holiday gift. At first I wasn't crazy about it but after several listens I really like it.
Was it the Best Album of 2014 for me? no.
but the chance of something I like being album of the year, unless it is in the jazz or blues category, is remote.

I wanted to mention Brandy Clark somewhere & looks like this is the place--I saw her as an opening act last year & she won the crowd over, just like that...also got to listen to "12 stories" and I am no country music fan but she found something interesting in everything she sang about--a pairing with Dwight Yoakam was the highlight of the broadcast for me, especially since I turned it off right after annie lennox sang.

Hat tip and compliments to Bump.

The best was kayne growing annoyed at fan who never stood up during his show. He stopped the concert and went on rant, saying he would not continue unless everyone stands up and there's no reason why you shouldn't stand unless you're in a wheelchair. Dude was in a wheelchair. Classic kayne.

Kanye West floats in a bowl...

Rap is so hard to follow the politics.
Just to get it clear. He is West but was born on the South East Syde. Moved to Chicago and became West in the Mid Syde. From there he went to China which made him West on the Far East Syde. He then moved to the West Syde which makes him West on the West Syde. His daughter is named North West and becomes North West on the West Syde. Her middle names are South East which makes her North South East West. Affectionally called Compass.
All of this explains why no other rapper has shot him yet. Nobody knows what Syde he is on. With any luck, everyone will open fire.

(to the tune of the Mr. Ed tv show theme song)
An ass is an ass
and he has no class
and he constantly spews like a bag of gas
if there's really an ass that we all detest
it's that a$$hole Kanye West

LMAO! Never under estimate how much comedic inspiration one fool can provide for all of us.

I agree 100%....my only fear for us older fookers....is this how our folks were talking about them damn long haired, drug using animals playing that lowly loud unruly crap they call music that we listened to? Of course we turned out to be mostly right by finding the best music, but those younger and older were wrong! 😉 😛

At least our bands/artists and our parents favorites played some of the same instruments. In todays' fast paced world, they bother learning an instrument at all? Turntable, computer, mixer and someone else's music are all you need. Oh and a microphone to tell everyone how bad ass you are. Just skip any actual musical knowledge. It's too much like school.
We're old. LOL
My nephew does awesome with this DJ stuff. Has me come watch his "set" and he plays some peoples' music, mixes in some beats, mixes in some other music that again someone else made. People cheer, dance all night and into the morning and buy tickets. Will likely never understand how he is an artist. But what the hell? I'm old.

That's a good point about DJs and people that create songs out of samples of other songs.
But there are other electronic artists out there that create everything from scratch using electronic equipment and synths, painstakingly creating an album over the course of a year or more, playing all kinds of sounds themselves. It really is a very wide open genre.

Perhaps ironically, you could be talking about Beck (and not Jeff) - the very artist Mr. West most recently interrupted at an awards podium. While not my type of music, Beck is a multi-instrumentalist and plays some mostly original compositions. "Mostly original" - anybody remember BigAnn's post about how Johnny Sandlin detected one of his drumbeats being sampled on a Beck recording? 😉

Thank You! I've wanted to say something like that for a long time.
First off, in reference to his above quote, what the heck is he talking about? What exactly are the artists "coming back" to? And who is "playing with" whom, and how?
I simply do not get the Kanye-as-creative-genius phenomenon that has been perpetuated over the last several years. He seems to be oblivious to the fact that there's a difference between being popular/famous/media fodder and being "taken seriously". Hell, IMO, it's been a while since the Grammy's could be taken seriously anyway, but that's another discussion...
From what I've seen, this guy (much like his wife) is - at least at this point - a "celebrity" first and foremost. The other stuff (i.e. music) is just packaging & branding. The only genius I've seen him display is an ability to manipulate the media into covering his every word & move as if they were somehow important. If he wants to be taken seriously as an artist, maybe he should chill out on the media stunts and let his art speak for itself. (And no - download sales and media coverage do not constitute being "taken seriously".)
As for the I'm-stopping-my-show-until-everyone-stands-up incident : if you have to stop your show and demand a positive reaction from your audience, maybe it's the show that's lacking. Of course, I know that it was in all likelihood just a pre-planned way to try to get the crowd riled up - that's an age-old ploy. But to take it to the extreme of singling out one audience member (handicapped or not) who isn't giving him the reaction that he feels he deserves to me smacks of both desperation and megalomania.
This is not meant to be a personal attack on him - just some observations. To be fair, he may not in his personal life be the pompous ass that he comes off as in the media. But if he constantly dons that persona in order to get attention then that's how he'll be perceived.

Don't you mean Can-Yay , ha, ha
(that is how Christopher Walken pronounced his name on the SNL 40yr Anniv show)

Musical genius? Can this guy find middle C without a road map? Does he know which end of a guitar to blow into?

I'm not a fan of KW by any means but John Lennon said many of the same kind of things in the Rolling Stone interview.
Dissing people and remining us he was a genius.

Okay, I try to keep an open mind. I realize that I am no longer young and hip. Every time I her myself starting to sound like my parents (who were actually into some pretty good music), I stop myself and say, "let's give this stuff a chance".
So I watched Kanye's performance on the SNL Reunion show. This did absolutely nothing for me.
"Bad performance/material", sez I. So I hit YouTube for about a half an hour.
Yeah, and okay. Maybe it's just something that I don't get.
But are you suggesting that Kanye West is a "genius" in the same sense as John Lennon?
Seriously - I'm just asking.
