Joe Bonamassa's radio show

Was just listening to Joe Bonamassa's radio show on SiriusXM, and the theme was Strat Masters. I made a youtube list of the stuff he played. Hope you enjoy it!!
Â

Was not aware of his radio show, I do listen to his podcast Live From Nerdville. Maybe he will do a Les Paul masters. I will definitely tune into that!!
Â
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

@jszfunk Here is Joe doing excellent volume knob playing on a blues piece. I saw Joe about three years ago and he played a Les Paul on most of the electric stuff. Did play a Strat on three songs and a Tele in one.Â
Â
The Fender Stratocaster is the best selling electric guitar in history and now come in a wide variety of set ups including smaller and larger necks, larger headstocks, hardtail to Floyd Rose whammies to Humbuckers, P-90s and several other pickups and of course single coil.Â
Gibson Les Paul is listed at the same guitar info site as number two. Dickey's Goldie, best tone I've heard.Â
Telecaster is third and number one with county and western swing players.Â
Paul Reed Smith is number four but the model escapes me just now.Â
And SG from Gibson is fifth. I like an SG too.Â
I have an SG with nice tone and an old Strat with a humbucker in the bridge position. I thought it was two single coils wired together when I bought it but its not. Looked like it because the cover is missing. It has good bite too.Â
Old Strats usually have been modified. Body routed out for larger pickups. Two knobs instead of three and on and on. So you may not know what the heck you're getting with old road worn Strats unless you are a real sharp gear guy.Â
Â

@jszfunk GM on a Strat via a cell phone. Technically off the scale!! I'm sure EVH and SV could play this solo. Or could they? Yeah I guess this isn't over their heads. All were/are technical wizards.Â
Not sure EVH could play this fast ( video has several lightening fast runs. jszfunk. You tell me. Thanks 🙏
Â

My favorite electric guitar tone is a Les Paul such as Dickey's fat tone on Goldie. But I keep finding things played on a Strat apparently you can't play on a Les Paul. A Strat with a whammy has a lot more notes on it. And here Warren Haynes' favorite guitar player Jeff Beck FINDS THEM ALL!Â

I dig Joe’s show “Live From Nerdville” too..I could be wrong but I saw one with Warren Haynes and another with Dweezil Zappa.  Both episodes were very good. Dweezil mentioned Derek Trucks in answering one of Joe’s questions about one of kind unique players simply born with virtuoso natural talent. Â
Anyway, I would recommend listening to both episodes of Live From Nerdville....

Warren’s story about the ABB being on the tonight show with Don Rickles was hilarious.  Dweezil’s story about EVH coming to visit Frank was good.  Just watched Joe’s interview with Steve Vai witch is good also.  Hope he does an interview with Satriani and Di Meola.

That was a funny story involving Don Rickles....It would seem Greg got a laugh out of it too...Rickles spared no one, even himself. Â I've always been a fan of his humor and very quick mind.

I just listened to the Steve Vai interview from "Live From Nerdville." Â Very good interview and I particularly enjoyed the insight into the making of "Crossroads" and Vai's collaboration with Rye Cooder on the film.
I also find it interesting that Steve Vai's uncle used to own and live on a farm in Heuvelton, NY....It's a town in way upstate, NY in a county named St. Lawrence county. Â Aptly named since it borders the mighty Saint Lawrence River (to give you a sense of how far upstate it's located).
I live about an hour and a half away from this little town and my mother in law grew up about 10 miles from this little hamlet....Kind of cool I suppose.

@chain I'm deeply impressed by how much Joe Bonamassa knows about guitars and amps. He is a major gear head. And Joe owns a huge collection of guitars, amps etc.Â
Some players when on a gear rundown don't know as much about their gear as their tech does. For example some have different pickups than a particular guitar usually features for it's age and the artist knows they are replacements to get a fatter sound or what have you, but doesn't know or remember what make of pickups are in the instrument now. Or what year the guitar or amp was built.Â
BTW. What happened to the original video up top of this thread? Did Joe have it pulled?Â

Yep...Joe is a very knowledgeable collector and true guitar nerd. Â You probably have seen it already, but if not, look for a youtube clip of Joe talking about and taking the viewer through just a small sample of his collection. Â I don't think it's his show but rather was interviewed by someone else in this clip.
It might be related to the show "Rig Run down".....Try and find it as it's a great snippet to watch. Â To help narrow it down, I think he was in his apartment in Nashville or possibly NYC where he stores a portion of his collection. Â I got the impression his collection is so vast he stores them in multiple locations across the country. Â And not just guitars, but he collects vintage amps too...

@chain I like Joe. All the guitar players like him. Yes he has a vast collection of electrics, acoustics and amps. And he knows what changes have been made and how to get all the cool tones out of his guitars and amps.Â
After Joe became more known he was often ripped as a Gary Moore clone. And Joe has a Goldtop Les Paul named Gary Moore and admitted Gary was a huge influence. Years ago Joe said one thing he learned from Gary Moore is all you need is a Marshall amp and a Les Paul Goldtop:) But I don't really see that with Joe now. He is a very good player. Can play as fast as anybody when he wants too and is usually very clean. Â
Supposedly Keith Richards also has a vast collection of electric guitars. Said to be in the thousands and apparently Keith today is not sure how many he owns.Â
Update! According to this Keith says he owns 3,000 guitars so he knows how many but usually only plays 10 of them.Â

My favorite Keith lick! When the balloons drop, Keith HITS THE BEST LICK WITH HIS GUITAR EVER!! It will KNOCK YOU OUT!!Â
Â
Â

Although from what I've seen, Joe plays Les Pauls about 70 percent of the time, he is such a gear nerd that he knows the Strat (subject of this thread thou the original video up top has been yanked by someone) Joe knows the Strat forward and backwards. A treasure trove of tips here from Joe as to how to get a myriad of tones and sounds including making it sound like that violin you probably have there somewhere in your home out of a Stratocaster. Joe shows how just how versatile a Strat is.Â
