Jeff "Skunk" Baxter knows his stuff!!

Jeff's personality and even his look reminds me of Butch Trucks 😂

He's an interesting guy. After music Jeff became a defense consultant, something about missile defense systems. Not the 2nd career you'd expect from a jazz guitarist.
Whenever I hear "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" I think of Horace Silver. Pretty standard latin bass line but still...

Porkchopbob what a surprising piece of information and that track by Horace Silver was very surprising. To my ears THAT IS EXACTLY THE SAME THING!!!!
I went into the closet and dug out my copy of Pretzel Logic and the song is credited to Walter Becker and Donald Fagen!!
I found Rikki Don't Lose That Number 's Wikipedia page and whoever put that page together states the into is almost a direct copy of the riff in Horace Silver's "Song For My Father".
Pretzel Logic sold over a million copies in the US alone!! Don't you think Silver should be on that credit. He apparently missed out on a pile of royalty money! In the late 2000's Butch Trucks said in an interview the reason Dickey is worth more money than the rest of the band is because he bullied control of the song writing credits then went on about Dickey not allowing Rocking Horse on Where It All Begins and replaced it with Mean Woman Blues and Rocking Horse is a much better song.
So there is real money in those song writing/publishing credits no doubt if the album sells well.
Also notice Jim Gordon ( Derek and the Dominoes) is the drummer and Timothy B. Schmidt ( Eagles ) is background vocals on Rikki Don't Lose That Number which according to Becker is not about marijuana but a piece of paper with a phone number given to a girl back in collage.
Thank you for the Horace Silver track. I was completely surprised to hear that melody. That would have won if taken to court. Judge would say " Time to pay up boys"
Did you discover that after the Steely Dan album csme out?
And that is a crazy next career move for Skunk!!! I remember when Becker and Fagen scaled back the band to just them and Skunk was out. But he was picked up by the Doobie Brothers quickly and I didn't really keep up with him. But did remember reading years ago Skunk knew music theory, cords and structure forwards and backwards and knows he way all over a guitar but didn't know he was into rocket science!!!

Steely Dan guitarist, Denny Dias is also a high-tech consultant/programmer. I'm not going to bother to run all that stuff down right now. He was actually the founding father of Steely Dan. He was looking to further his own jazz band - placed an ad in the Village Voice that read (in part), “Bass and keyboard player required, must have jazz chops. No assholes need apply.”
I don't know how he got phased out of his own band, but I guess it means that Fagen and Becker are/were not assholes?

Must be why Chevy Chase didn't last with the band.

Okay, that's hilarious!
Big, huge Chevy Chase fan - burst my bubble to bits to find that most everybody who ever worked with him considers him to be the world's biggest asshole!

Dig his stuff with the Doobies way better...
