@jszfunk Oh wow. I've been watching a movie on TV. You have a lot of stuff here. I'll have to watch some of it or most of it tomorrow. Too late. I can't burn the candle at both ends anymore. Born 1946 same year as H. D. Allman. Heck some days can't burn it at one end long.

I'm not familiar with Nigel Tufnel. But he has gear to show. Want to see what it is.

Hope there isn't one someday with Keith Richards showing his 3,000 guitars. It would takes hours!!! Zzzzzzzzzzz. What is he doing with 3,000 guitars?

The old black and white footage of the Rolling Stones Keith is usually playing a Les Paul with a Bigsby whammy bar. And when he took his guitar off and smashed a fan in the face with it for running up on the stage, that was a Telecaster. Okay that is enough. Two is fine.

Nigel Tufnel is a character from the cult classic rock spoof comedy movie "Spinal Tap"

Here is trailer from the movie

@bill_graham Oh I've heard of that. Thanks for the movie clip. It was a good clip. There are tons of clips from movies online now.

And lots of old movies on YouTube in their entirety. I watched Ride Lonesome starring Randolph Scott from 1959. It's been viewed over 1 MILLION times. Some films from the 40's and 50's over 5 million times. Were they seen that many times when they were released to theatres???

And old TV episodes. I watched a Rifleman episode from 1960 on YouTube and it's been viewed over 1 MILLION.

@robertdee Yeah it is a funny spoof on 1970's rock bands if you have not seen it. There is a scene where one of the band members shows his amp to an interviewer and explains it goes up to 11 instead of the usual 10.  I was watching a video the other day and some new guitar amp Mfg has his amps go to 12.

@bill_graham That was funny. How can you make 10 louder?? That would be 11!!! Smile

I've heard some loud rock bands. Makes your ears ring the next day or so. Led Zeppelin was the loudest and people near the stage may have had hearing damage. Jimi Hendrix in 1968 opening for all people The Monkeys had a very loud guitar. Stack of Marshalls apparently but I wasn't aware of the names of Amp manufactures then. Didn't know much about Stratocasters then either. I didn't know then that Jimi was playing a right handed Strat upside down and the whammy bar wasn't suppose to be on top of the bridge and the controls were upside down too. Can't remember if it was strung upside down.

Here is another Joe Bonamassa gear video. last time it was his Los Angeles stash of mint gear and this time is it his Nashville condo gear he plays on the road.

Seventy three minutes long so maybe only for the gear geek but lots of 1958-60 Les Paul's so I find these videos fascinating.

Just for the heck of it. Peter Green's Les Paul was an extremely faded cherry burst.  I don't beleive it was wired out of phase, I believe it happened when Green reversed the magnets in the neck pickup and reinstalled it "upside down" with the pole pieces on the bridge side instead of the neck side.  Additionaly, the story I heard was that Green, after his breakdown, was released from the hospital, some guy talked Green into letting him become his manager, he bought Green a new Les Paul, which Green than gave to the operator of the freight elevator of the office building he was in when the elevator operator said he always wanted to play guitar.

@njpaulc Here is a video on the Greeny Les Paul. Oh the lead player for Metallica PAID TWO MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE GUITAR!!!

And here it is!!! The greatest electric guitar ever made in the history of the world!!!!! Peter Greene with the Blues Breakers in 1967.

It's now played in the heavy metal band Metallica!!

Nobody has ever owned or played an electric guitar better than this Les Paul. Not even Les Paul the man had one like this!!!

@porkchopbob I forget Joe sometimes. He is a very fine slide player and has made a lot of money in his career.

I didn't know Joe and Jimmy had met. But I saw the James Gang a few times and Joe had some fine sounding Les Pauls.

@rusty Nice looking Strat. Mark Knoffler said in his rig rundown where he shows several nice guitars including a 1959 Les Paul that I thought was wonderful, that a Fender Stratocaster has the best shape and look of any guitar. Maybe. LPs look fine too.

@jszfunk I was just reading John Bonham studied this old jazz track from the 1950's for drum solo ideas and I can hear Bonham in this high octane atomic bomb drumming. This has two big explosive drum solos at Mach speed that sounds like Bonham!!

@robertdee Jack mentions "strumming a tennis racket ..." when he was a kid.  I'd bet he sounded better on that piece of sports equipment than the racket that a lot of players make on high-dollar guitars!  😉

@rusty You must be right. Jack is so creative and versatile. And talented. He has a million licks and plays slide as good as anybody I've heard.

Maybe that is why those very cheap guitars sound very good in his hands. If someone could play some music on a tennis racket it would be Jack.

@bill_graham Yeah I'll listen to this. Their new album(s) are/is the best new music I've heard in years. I'm been a Derek fan for years and first heard Susan when she opened for the Allman Brothers at a show I saw in 1999. Liked her too from the get go. She played a blue or blue/green Telecaster with a lot of signatures on it. Lots of players had signed it. I bet Derek signed it somewhere.

Derek bought her a Stratocaster several years ago and Eric Clapton gave her a cherry burst Les Paul. I wish I had people giving me nice guitars!:)

@robertdee Rare Earth was a great band! JMO but they should have big bigger than they were.

I just bought their live album on used 2LP vinyl recently.

Nice sounding live album but wish they had made it without gaps between tracks so it played like a real concert

@bill_graham Yes I saw them once about 1973. The drummer was especially hot and strong and had a good voice. Motown created a record label for them because everyone on Berry Gordy's labels was black and here he signed a white band. The lable was Rare Earth. Gordy didn't have all his black acts on Motown. He had a Gordy label and I think another. But they all had Motown Detroit Michigan in the fine print on the label.

Rare Earth kinda reworked some Motown hits but they didn't last but a few years for some reason.

I saw on the news Judith Durham passed away the other night of chronic lung disease at age 79. I had a girlfriend back in the 1960's who liked folk music and was into Joni Mitchell...Peter, Paul and Mary, Petula Clark and she liked Judith Durham and the Seekers so I had to go to a theatre with her and see then in 1967 to keep from being thrown out and becoming  homeless but I actually enjoyed them even if it wasn't my bag.

Someone mentioned these 1/4 scale guitar replicas earlier

You can get these Duane Allman replicas individually or collect the whole set.

https://store.axeheaven.com/collections/gibson-miniature-replicas/products/duane-allman-set-of-3-gibson-les-paul-signature-mini-guitar-models

Here is the tobacco burst.

https://store.axeheaven.com/collections/gibson-miniature-replicas/products/duane-allman-gibson-les-paul-tobacco-burst-duane-back-mini-guitar-model

Since I am a fan of Les Paul's my family got me a cherry sunburst (not a Duane) last Christmas to display in my office and the detail is amazing. You can even fret the nylon strings.

@bill_graham Les Paul guitars to me, have the best stock tone for most types of music. Full, fat and cuts through.

Apparently Les wanted the guitar to have a whammy bar but the guitar isn't noted to have one. After Dickey saw and got aquatinted with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dickey had a whammy bar added to his iconic 1957 Goldtop dubbed "Goldie" and you can hear Dickey use the whammy on Pattern Disruptive.

Initially the Les Paul didn't sell as well as Gibson had hoped so Gibson updated the Les Paul in 1961 but Les didn't like the updated guitar and insisted Gibson REMOVE his name from the headstock. That would be a marketing disaster for Gibson so naturally they removed Les Paul's name and that guitar became the SG which became a good seller to this day for Gibson.

The Les Paul was reintroduced and it too became a best seller and used by many famous players around the world.

Just checked on line and the best selling top 5 guitars of all time are:

1. Fender Stratocaster

2. Gibson Les Paul

3. Fender Telecaster

4. Paul Reed Smith Custom 24

5. Gibson SG

The two lists I found are the same. But I wonder if the PRS Custom 24 has been around long enough to be the 4th best selling electric guitar of all time.

Some of the best electric guitar tone ever!! The video here doesn't match but what tone from Duane and Dickey. It's sensational and hitting the note!!

I would not dispute that the Fender Strat is the top selling guitar as Gibson did not sell that many Les Pauls in the 1950's and only revived it in 1969 so there was a 9 year gap in sales. I also read that Gibson did not start selling them in any quantity until the 1980's I believe. Fender sold the Stratocaster continuously since introduction in 1954.

I would also be curious what Strat models are included in the sales number they used for the ratings as less expensive Stratocasters are made in Mexico, Japan and other countries other than the US but are still considered Stratocasters while the Gibson Les Paul is only made in the US.

Gibson has the Epiphone brand for Les Paul models made outside the US so curious if those are included in the Les Paul sales numbers.

Concerning PRS they only started in the mid 1980's and it probably took them into the 1990's before they sold any volume as initially all PRS guitars were hand made in a  small facility in Maryland I believe.

Quick story related to my experience with PRS

Back in the late 1980's or early 90's(?) I was working for a Safety Regulatory Agency and went to visit the PRS factory as they were looking to possibly get approval on a new solid state guitar amplifier head w/ reverb that had special circuits that mimicked tube amps they were designing.

I got a tour of their guitar making facility and it was very small and they were making all the guitars by hand back then so I am guessing their production was minuscule compared to Fender and Gibson so I am surprised they made #4 on the list but since it is for specific models that is pretty impressive considering the late start they got in the market.

BTW AFAIK PRS never did market that solid state amp because, from what I was told, they could not get the power rating out of it they wanted. It is  pity as the design was basically done and it had a beautiful form factor design with clear toggle switches that would light up when a function was selected.

I got to hear a guitar player they hired to test it play through it and it sounded really nice IMHO. The amp proto production line was across the street from the guitar facility in a strip warehouse facility which was a bunch of joined garage spaces.

From memory I believe there was a mattress factory(?) next door and I was told they were not happy with the noise when the guitarist had the amp cranked during his testing and would bang on the wall.

Edit: WOW!, looks like they actually made and sold a small quantity of the solid state amp, less than 300 units, which look a lot like the one I saw

So I was going through my pile of Guitar magazines today to see if I could get rid of some clutter and found a few of my old Guitar Trader flyers from the 1980's. Guitar Trader was a music store in NJ that specialized in used gear and put out a monthly flyer.

Here are some pix of the first full flyer from 1982 showing what look like incredibly low prices for vintage guitars that sell for tens to hundreds of thousands today.

Oh, if I only had the cash back then to buy a bunch of 50's Les Paul's or preCBS Fender Stratocasters but considering I was a starving college student in 1982 I barely had money for tuition.

Check out these Gibson prices. A 1959 Les Paul for $7500 and a 1955 Black Beauty with P90 single coils for $1250. And Les Paul Juniors for $550.

They would even pick you up at the airport and reimburse your airfare if you bought a 1959 Les Paul

If you could not afford the real thing they were one of the first people to attempt to do a 1959 Les Paul reissue. They made a deal with Gibson to do a special run of somewhat accurate LP's but only ended up making around four dozen or so. They even loaded them with real vintage 1950's PAF Humbuckers while supplies lasted.

Or if you are more of a Fender man how about a nrmint 1959 sunburst hardtail for $2500
