Here is a treat. This takes you WAY BACK to old Check Adkins first professional band.Â

Yes, the article explains how Gretsch introduced Atkins to the Filtertron humbucker as he complained about the pickups in his Gretsch humming.
Also interesting is the inventor of the Filtertron filed for a patent right before Gibson did for the PAF's. He received royalties from Gretsch for each pickup.
Good read when you have time.

Guitar made from aluminum cans

Gonna switch gears for a second. Two part question.
1. Your first guitar and amp make and model.
2. The first "rock" song you learned to play on guitar besides the obligatory Smoke On The Water.
My first guitar was a Peavey Patriot. The amp was also a Peavey. It was a low wattage solid state, for the life of me I cant remember the model.
First song to learn the whole way through was Rock The Nation by Montrose.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

FIRST GUITAR(S): first instrument was a Magnatone Hurricane bass. I was 15 - had just learned of the Allman Brothers - very inspired by Berry Oakley. Dad bought it from a lady who played it in church. I think the amp I had was a Kingston, solid state model. I never got lessons or training - didn't learn how to play the thing. Eventually, it got stolen. Â
Next "first guitar" -A Sears-Roebuck classical guitar. Former brother in law taught me the basic "cowboy chords". I think ELP's, "Lucky Man" was the first song I learned to play.  The Gibson Melody Maker that I mention so often was my first electric guitar. Wanting to be a rock star, I saved my money and bought a 100 watt Ampeg VT-22. Can you say, "overkill"? Sure ya can!
FIRST ROCK SONGS: Besides the basic A-D-E boogie progression (trying to be Chuck Berry) - I'd buy every one of those "dot" books that I could find. The Bad Company (first LP) book taught me the incorrect way to play "Can't Get Enough" - along with most every other song on that album. Trust me when I tell you that I thought I was King $hit! 😉Â

@jszfunk Mine was a sunburst, but yeah. Rock solid bass guitar with a reputation as "the next best thing to a Fender".
Magatone is known for its amplifiers (Ry Cooder, Susan T. and others will attest). I've shopped Reverb for them, they seem rare and even pricey when they turn up. I'd love to have the one that I owned. Not sure I'd pay the typical asking price if one turned up for sale.

@robertdee Not nearly as tight as the version with Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn et al on "Briefcase Full Of Blues".  Did the Brothers actually really know this tune? 😉

Gibson Les Paul alternatives

@bill_graham Guy at the big music store here claims the ESP Is a dead ringer for the Les Paul sound and tone without the weight and big price tag.Â
Has sold several to young Slash fans who can leave with a Les Paul unless they steal it. Don't have or mom and dad don't or won't have the price of admission.Â

An older player was in the store last week. Mostly country and county rock player and he was fooling around with the new Fender Stratocaster American Professional 2 and loved it. Bought it too and sold them his Tele.Â
His was yellow. Lots of nice clean tones with 5 way switch and two tone knobs and advanced single coils with warm or heavy tones.Â

This old beat up Strat for $750.00 is my kind of Strat. I like them almost as much as a late 50's Les Paul.Â

Thanks for sharing that. I have mentioned this before, that I am looking at getting away or just a change from the Epi Les Paul with my next electric, which might be this weekend! Nothing wrong , love them, just wanting something different. I went and played a variety of Gretsch models, and was VERY impressed. I think they have that stigma of being a Chet Atkins type music guitar or Setzer rockabilly. They are more than that.
This 1st video I HIGHLY recommed. He does a real good job demonstrating the tones between the two. The 2nd is Andertons and they are always good to watch.

Gibson and Heritage settle lawsuit

Just heard on the album rock station here that U. S. Customs intercepted 36 brand new electric guitars at LAX shipped from Singapore.Â
They were a mix of Gibson Les Pauls, ES-335s, SGs, Fender Stratocasters and Fender Telecasters.Â
Gibson and Fender logos on the headstocks and the exact body, neck and headstock shapes.Â
Problem is THEY ARE ALL FAKES!! The guitars WERE NOT MADE BY GIBSON AND FENDER!!Â
I've read this is a big problem for Rolex watches and never knew fake Gibson and Fender guitars were being built.Â
Anyone heard of that before?;
Â

@robertdee I've seen several deals on Gibsons that turned out to be fake. If a deal seems too good to be true ...
Watching You-tube videos about junktiques and salvaging I stumbled onto this. Long video, but this guy allegedly finds a black LP in a trash can - which he determines to be counterfeit. I wonder if he placed the guitar there for his "show"? Long clip but he goes over the guitar and points out some signs of bogusness. Â
