Thanks to the recent documentary, the whole world recognizes the "official" four Muscle Shoals Swampers (David Hood, Jimmy Johnson, Roger Hawkins and Barry Beckett - the latter an alumni of my high school) - but there were several other players at the studio around the same time who contributed to many of the records you've heard all your life.  Guitarist, Junior Lowe was one of them.  Dead at the age of 84 - farewell to Junior!

I've heard of Junior. Wilson Pickett was very popular in the 1960's and he recorded much of his hits on Atlantic Records as did other soul artists not on Motown and I read about the Muscle Sholes musicians in a 1968 copy of Cash Box magazine and I remember Junior Lowe's name. David Hood too. He played a Fender bass and they kidded David saying " we have a Hood on a Fender".

@robertdee About 15 years or so ago, I was at a music awards type show in Birmingham (honoring musicians from the state).  Part of the entertainment featured a band that included Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers.  Patterson is the son of Swamper, David Hood.  After the show folks were milling around the lobby as the theater emptied.  I saw David Hood and walked over and started a conversation (we have mutual friends).  A younger girl  who worked in my wife's office walked up to her the next day and asked why I was talking to Patterson Hood's father.  I told my wife to tell her coworker that Patterson's father was a bonafide superstar when Patterson was still crappin' his diapers!

@rusty

Sorry to hear about Junior. I am not aware of him.

That David Hood story is funny. Ironically, I just figured out (like, two days ago) that he is Patterson's dad.

@rusty It makes me feel so ancient when I talk music or movies with young people. ( Don't get me wrong. I wish I were still young. I was 24:the first time I saw the Allman Brothers and I'm 78 now)

Recently I was in a grocery store and the pretty young lady at the cash register reminded me of a young Elizabeth Taylor. Hair, eyes, face.

So when she handed me my receipt, I told her. She said " Elizabeth Taylor. Who is that?" And I replied " You know the famous movie star." And she then said " Which movies has she been in? I don't know the name".

It was my fault. I didn't realize young ladies in their 20's likely wouldn't know Elizabeth Taylor.

When I was 24 I didn't know who Bee Bee Daniels was.

@robertdee I have an almost opposite effect with modern day celebrities .  I do several crossword puzzles each day.  Quite often there are clues for current singers, actresses etc.  - I can get all but one letter and still not be able to figure out the answer!

@rusty I hear you Rusty. I recent read Taylor Swift is the most popular singer and celebrity in the world!! And only the second singer to become a BILLIONAIRE!! The first is Sir Paul McCartney.

But I must admit if I heard a Taylor Swift song in the radio today, I wouldn't know who it is.

@robertdee if it hadn't been for her appearances during NFL games I probably wouldn't recognize Taylor Swift if she walked up and kicked me in the balls at Wal-Mart.
