Story is Duane jumped on the tour bus and played in Syracuse the next night before rejoining the Allman Brothers. I believe only Curtis Hixon was recorded. Anybody got that Syracuse tape and is holding out? Ha ha!

This is from a recent silver bootleg release by the Japanese label Tarantura. It appears to be a SQ upgrade from the sources I have. Still a bit rough but listenable

There are actually two bootleg sources of the Tampa show available. The first, which was for many years the only one circulated, had everything between songs cut out. The second one which was tracked down by Japanese Clapton collectors actually has the band's introduction included along with stage comments between songs. Not sure if it was a colossal blunder or an attempt at a joke but the emcee introduces them as Ernest Clapton & The Dominoes. The second source is a better sounding one but as mentioned still pretty rough sonic wise. For years, dirtbag traders were simply rearranging the order of the Tampa songs and passing it off as Syracuse. Nothing from that second show has ever legitimately surfaced.

Years later, unsold and unused tickets from various Curtis Hixon shows were discovered at the venue including the show with Duane. I have one given to me by Captain Skipper. They sometimes appear for sale on Ebay too.

"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

I have told this before but I had a chance to go and blew it off.  I was attended St. Pete Jr. College majoring in draft evasion and my friend asked me three times that day if I wanted to go.  He would drive, etc.

I just didn’t.

No knew Duane was going to be there however.

The story I read was from one of the roadies that he drove Duane to the gig, Duane got paid $1000, and gave him half. Never heard about a bus to Syracuse. Every once in a while you hear about the possible sound board tape, but you think by now, we would have heard. There's enough discernible sound in Key, Blues Power and Have You Ever to cement Duane's position in being the greatest guitarist to ever live, maybe musician.

@tenorsfan That letter he wrote and asked the young lady not to tell anyone that Eric Clapton asked Duane to join Derek and the Dominos means Clapton was breaking up the Allman Brothers Band if it worked. And Duane didn't indicate in his letter he would say no.

Back then the rumor was heard and some would say the ABB would have kept going if Duane had left to be in a band that was assured to make it because Clapton was in it because they did when Duane lost his life.

But I didn't think so. The other guys in the ABB would likely be hurt and perhaps angry and break up.

Bobby Whitlock claims Duane couldn't keep up when he played with them live and the experience failed. That is silly talk. Duane was their equal and the music on Fillmore East shows Duane could keep up in most Amy band.

I've never heard or read a word that Clapton fever decided Duane couldn't cut the gig.

I remember an interview with Clapton about 1975 or so and he was asked who are the electric guitarists who really impress you and Clapton said " Living or dead or both because there are Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman".

@robertdee

Whitlock says a lot of things, his stories change. I get maybe Duane wasn't as locked in with the Dominos on stage since he had been touring with his band non-stop for 2 years. Whitlock also said Duane Allman's slide was out of tune on "Layla" (a slide is constantly passing between frets so it's constantly going in and out of the note). Based on his accounts I think he has a pretty fragile ego. Can you image you're a songwriter/guitarist in Clapton's new band and then Duane Allman, folk guitar hero, steps in? Then the band breaks up and your solo albums all tank. Sour grapes.

Thanks for that studio Key to the Highway. Sometimes you think they're so imbued in you that you don't have to hear them any more, but it really hit me this time. I don't know which is my favourite, this or the Tampa one, but to hear Duane explode here at the 8.00 minute mark, all the joy and enthusiasm in that man's heart and he was able to transform it all into music to an unequaled degree, what a miracle and privilege to hear it. Last night, my tube amp mysteriously started working again and I was blasting Herschel Evans' last ditch attempt at Stardust, his humble contribution for record of the century, and now to shiver me timbers with old Skydog, blimey, Christmas coming early around here.
