Dickey Betts & Co - Midnight Special 1978

Yes Dickey is Porkchopbob!! It was his backup during the first run of Great Southern. This is one of several times he used it when Charlie Daniels was on the same show!! Reason??Â
Because Charlie wrote " People down in Georgia come from near and far to hear Richard Betts pickin' on that RED guitar" in his hit The South Is Going To Do It Again.
When Charlie wrote that song Dickey's number one was a sunburst Les Paul with zebra pickups. Dickey gave up on it because it was difficult to keep in tune and Dickey found a 1957 Goldtop Les Paul at a Pawn Shop in Manhattan in 1974 and suddenly he didn't have a red guitar for number one.Â
Dickey said he then was getting asked, especially if Charlie was around " What happened to your red guitar?" So for those occasions he used his backup. But I saw Charlie open for Dickey in Charlotte and Dickey played Goldie.
When the ABB got back together in 1978 Dan Toler had an old Les Paul that was a little picky about staying in tune and an old Stratocaster. So Dickey gave Danny the Fillmore East guitar.Â
I was disappointed when I read Danny had sold the guitar to a collector. It was Danny's number one all through the Gregg Allman Band in the 1980's.
I ask Danny about it in Charlotte because it's a favorite ax of mine and at that occasion he said he still had it but didn't play it anymore.Â

The times I saw Great Southern in the 1970's Dan Toler played this old guitar.Â
Note after Danny solos Dickey plays and he is on the bridge pickup. Something he onced claimed he never used. Neck pickup and occasionally in the middle but not bridge only.

@PorkchopBob, thanks for the visit back to the golden days of concerts on television. Man how I miss those times for sure .I recently purchased several DVDs of the Midnight Special. Seems so long ago, and sad that so many of the performers are long gone. RIP to all who performed!
