Check out this incredible, super funky, stunningly awesome clip of Buddy Miles from Hugh Hefner's Playboy After Dark TV show that we used to watch on local TV in the early 1070s when all we could get was three local channels and that is it! To give them credit, during this segment, they made everybody on the set have the ability to clap to a real funk groove. Even Hef is lighting his pipe and clapping in time to the groove. And the dancing??? Has the stank on it!!

What is the second song played by Buddy Miles amidst this TV show throwdown?? The Allman Brothers band song "Dreams." Here we go;

Sounds like the groove that Molly Hatchet ripped off for their head-banger verison of "Dreams".

Funky funky horns. Didn't know Buddy Miles was such a good singer!

Yep but Buddy's is funky....I always thought MH's version was an inability to play 3/4 time..... 😮 😛 😉

After all these years, I have still never heard the MH version.

Love the dancing in the clip. Too funny.

I use to think it was a really bad cover of the original but I know now it's a really bad version of Buddy's version....You aren't missing a thing

BTW....MH showed up at a local music store back in the day and they absolutely bad talked Duane and the ABB....so that night I went to see them open for the Outlaws and I gained my opinion about them by first listening to them down talk about Duane and the ABB then going to listen to them stand on stage and sound like a really bad garage band

Never thought MH had anything original to offer. I did like their interpretation of Dreams until I learned they ripped it off Buddy Miles. Now I have absolutely no respect for them.

Buddy actually released versions of "Midnight Rider" and "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" in addition to "Dreams." I seem to remember that Buddy hung out with Hourglass at The Whiskey A Go Go back in the days.

Molly Hatchet ripping off Buddy Miles is no different than the ABB ripping off Taj Mahal & Jesse Ed Davis.

All of those tunes can be found on the excellent best of Buddy Miles:

I don't ever remember the ABB talking bad about Taj and Jessie Ed davis

Not to mention the ABB can play......What I saw from MH after listening to them talk bad about Duane and the ABB was a bad garage band

Saw a version of MH with Danny Joe Brown singing at a small club, Toads Place, New Haven CT., in the late 80's or early 90's and thought their version of Dreams was fantastic. It was certainly different then the ABB version but it was excellent IMHO. It had similar pacing to the Buddy Miles version but certainly was not a direct copy. Here is a good version from 1983 with the 3 guitar version of the band.

and another from 1979 with essentially the original band and a different ending

Don't really care what the controversy is about them bad mouthing Duane or ABB as it has no bearing on my enjoyment of MH's cover of "Dreams"

In any case I love seeing these old Playboy after Dark clips as they are a real time capsule of the era.

But it's note for note and such a distinctive rendering. And I too never understood MH's negative vibe about ABB. Professional envy I suppose.

Aside from the tune "Gator Country" I've never heard any trash talking from Hatchet members but I don't doubt it went on.
Likely envy & being young & full of piss & vinegar (like trash talking a rival sports team in high school).

In the recent book Southbound by Scott Bomar (highly recommended) Dave Hlubek talks about one of his pre Hatchet groups playing against the ABB in a battle of the bands & in his words "we sucked something terrible. Let's just say 'Massacre' isn't even a strong enough word!" Smile

One thing I did witness though was bassist Banner Thomas (co-writer of "Gator Country" - 'Old Richard Betts will tell ya lord he was born a ramblin' man, Well he can ramble back to Georgia but I won't give a damn') in the audience at a Dickey Betts show in Jacksonville in 2006.
Take that for what it's worth...

BTW - the cover of Southbound:

I guarantee it went on they did it in front of me for close to an hour while on their first tour. They were opening for the outlaws and they stopped at a local music store as a part of their promotion for the gig.

They spent close to an hour talking bad about Duane and the ABB.

It's not innuendo they did it in front of me not 5 feet from my ears....then they proceeded to suck as an open for the outlaws

Anyone here that likes MH is perfectly fine with me but to think they in anyway could hold a candle to the ABB is completely crazy....Not in the same league.....not even close....They got signed during a time when if you had 3 guitars and came form the south you'd get a contract alla LS and the outlaws and they couldn't even hold a candle to those bands. So to bad talk the ABB in my presence then suck again in my presence only a few hour later talks volumes to me

Love Buddy's music. I've got the Them Changes album and the Greatest Hits album that someone else mentioned here. His music is very cool, and I dig his voice.

And, of course, the Electric Flag stuff (not dissimilar from his solo stuff), is also very cool.

First off I respect your opinion Goldtop always have. If you said it happened, then I don't doubt you. However, a couple of friends of mine have different stories. Both of them have said what great, fan-friendly bunch the original band was. I saw them as the second act on a triple bill-Mothers Finest/Molly Hatchet/Blackfoot. It was a great night hell of a show and Molly Hatchet kicked it. I enjoyed their first four records and still listen to them from time to time. Hate to see them demonized as if it's the hip thing to do. Molly Hatchet has always reminded me of Kingdom Come and Corey Stevens, artists whose first records were successful but eventually suffered criticism as being rip offs of Zeppelin and SRV respectfully. It should be stated that several other bands and artists were equally as guilty as MH, KC and Corey Stevens, but for some reason Molly Hatchet, Kingdom Come and Corey Stevens took the fall. There is always going to be a demand for rock in the style of Skynyrd, Zeppelin and SRV. So ... somebody is going to be making it ... Also Goldtop I think it's important to remember the time frame in which you allege the ABB dissing occurred. If it was MH's first record (which Ronnie Van Zant was supposedly slated to produce), then we're talking 78. I'm a little bit hazy, but I believe the ABB was still dissolved at that time due to the Scooter Herring fallout and the public opinion of Gregg among the freaks was pretty low. Could that have been some of the reason for the dissing??? Anyway I always personally liked "Gator Country" more than "The South's Gonna Do It Again" (Talk about derivative clichéd writers ...) I always felt that "Gator Country" may have been a stab at the Capricorn stable/machine than any band in particular. Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws all signed with other labels. No Molly Hatchet isn't the Allman Brothers. Of course you could argue the Allmans haven't been the Allmans in some time either. So ... one final disrespect ... I'd venture that if you polled the general public, they'd say "Dreams" is a Hatchet tune. 😮

It's all good...:)

To say I "allege " would say there is doubt. I was a spectator in a small music store when someone mentioned the Allmans and Duane and they said that Duane was over rated as was the ABB...went on to bash them.

My experience was of a bunch of arrogant musicians on tour and for what I like they simply don't get there for me....then to be witness to the insulting way they talked about one of the greatest was a little uncalled for and it really put me off. The fact I already had ticket to see the Outlaws....MH just happened to be on the bill...and I just stumbled upon them at the music store. I had no idea they were going to be there and had no idea at the time really who they were. I was listening to a lot of blues at the time and was not into what was on the radio at the time.....So I really had no idea who they were....

They did not come off as nice....Arrogant yes...full of themselves....yes.....

Sorry my close up and personal experience with them

Goldtop that behavior would've colored my opinion of them as well. It's true what they say, "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression." I'm so glad that I've never been a jerk like that. 😉 Or ... Any of the Allmans for that matter ... 😉

Worked a couple of shows with the original band long ago. They were pretty good guys from what I remember. I joked at them about the wall of Peavey amps and how every guy used them. Asked if they wanted to borrow some Marshalls. I never liked the sound of Peavey amps. Duane and the ABB never came up so they were safe. But they were friendly as are most people from the south that I have met.
