I was listening to a local radio station this morning on the ride to work, a community-based station that is mostly volunteers doing 2-hour shows of their choice plus some NPR stuff (the station is WPKN from Bridgeport CT). The theme of this morning's show was Rockers Doing Blues Songs, and it was some unusual ones.

I heard some Frank Marino, Billy Thorpe doing "Rock Me Baby," Tom Jones doing "Done Somebody Wrong" (!!!), one surprise after another, stuff I had never heard before and certainly would not expect to hear on the radio.

The two songs that really got me were these: one by the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation, who I had never heard before. It was classic British Blues, right in that late 1960s John Mayall / Peter Green Fleetwood Mac zone. I think I need to get some of his stuff.

The other song I could not place - I was thinking maybe old Gary Moore because even though it too had an old British Blues vibe, the guitarist had some modern shred chops at the end - it turns out it was EUROPE.

I couldn't believe it!! I tend to think of them as another hair metal joke because all I know is "The Final Countdown," but this was really a good bluesy performance. Europe!! Go figure.
