I wasn’t sure what to make of the New Year’s Eve show. It’s available to stream on YouTube via Relix. Why hire an amazing guitarist like Marcus King if you’re not gonna let him play. Audley Freed took every solo. It was baffling. I saw them at Wanee and Marcus tore the place up. I don’t know what happened between then and now but Marcus is being stifled. He took one solo during Thorn in my Pride and that was it. Definitely no ass-kicking guitar playing like the Crowes are known for. Lackluster to say the least.

Can’t speak directly to the full show on the 31st yet as I haven’t watched it yet, but I paid for the stream on the 30th and King and Freed split the solos pretty close to 50/50. I didn’t stopwatch them or anything but my guess is Marcus played more solo time overall than Audley that night - King’s Wiser Time solo from the 30th was ridiculous and very long, no stifling to be sure. Lots of lengthy guitar in the show I watched, Almost Cut My Hair and Wiser Time were both pretty outstanding, Thorn in My Pride and My Morning Song well jammed out as well. I thought the show on the 30th was pretty strong overall with 4 or 5 truly incendiary moments.

Lots of Crowes songs are more song oriented rock than jam vehicles and may only have one solo. Maybe the 31st set just caught a few in a row that were Audley’s and threw off the split a little as they have been splitting them pretty evenly in the shows I got from Spring tour and the one I watched the other night. I must say as much as I love Marcus and agree with wanting to see him play as much as possible, I have always thought Audley was a very underrated player. I’ve really enjoyed getting to hear Audley really unleash on some of these tunes as I have always felt he was a little stifled in his Black Crowes tenure - he got less solo space and time than most of the other guys to play lead for the Crowes through the years. Although I’ve always really enjoyed Audley’s playing over the years including in the Crowes - some of these ATCF gigs have given Audley the chance to stretch even more and show me some gears I didn’t even know he had as a soloist.

Anyway, I’ve got watching the show from the 31st on my things to do list for this weekend - I’ll be back in this thread with a comment or two then once I’ve actually seen what we’re talking about.
