2018 Grammies are Tonight

Will Gregg take home 2 awards??
I'm both hoping that he will and predicting that he will. Not having heard the other nominees, I just think Southern Blood is TOO good not to bring home some statues.

I’m ign’nt. Are you thinking Best Blues? Lifetime Award?

Nothing for Gregg Derek & Susan.
Can't believe Gregg didn't get at least one.
Taj/Mo beat out Tedeschi Trucks for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Greg Allman was beat out by Jason Isbell in both category's,
Best American Roots Song & Best Americana Album.

Wow. I had no idea that they released results before the Awards show even started.

There's an awards show from 3:00 to 6:00 that's streamed live on their website.
Most of the lesser known awards are given out then.
Only the big Grammy awards are given out tonight on TV.

Really bummed was hoping Gregg would get one last nod from GrammyLand.

Should have but no.
Typical.

Hopefully Gregg's passing will be recognized during the show tonight.
As most of us here can attest too, Gregg Allman was many things. But regardless of the comings and goings in his life, he enjoyed performing and most importantly, he sang from his soul. Thank you Gregg.
I recorded it to see the tribute to the musicians we lost , other than that I could never sit through the whole show , a lot of crap I couldn't care less about I find the Grammys a boring joke , but hey that's just me .

I love Jason but his last two albums have been disappointing to me. Southeastern was just such a fantastic album it will be hard to match. I'm so glad he has straightened his life out but half the new songs are kind of boring. I guess it's hard to choose between the two; Gregg's album was better but mostly covers. 'Vampires' lyrically is awesome, but not as good a 'tune' as 'MOTF' to my ears.
As to the rest of the grammy's, it's mostly crap.

Sad to hear Gregg didn't win. I don't know who half the artists are but I was really impressed with Childish Gambino.

i cannot believe how the show snubbed Petty and Gregg. Amazing. They did a tribute to Fats Domino who IMO was nowhere of the influence of Petty and Gregg. They mentioned Petty and played one of his most obscure songs before the went over the people who died list. Gregg was a part of such list and they played a sentence of Midnight Rider.
I thought it would have bee a little more of an acknowledgment
Thought U2 was awful. Cannot stand that band anymore.

Fensranger, I have to disagree with you a little bit. "Wildflowers" is the title track to one of Petty's best-selling albums, so while it is not a Hit Single, I don't think it is obscure.
I also think it is an excellent choice to play such an intimate, soulful ballad rather than one of Petty's Greatest Hits that has been played 10 zillion times by classic rock radio.
That being said, I did not watch the Grammies, so if they butchered that song, I would have been pissed.

Yes, Gregg's tribute was thrown in very quickly as they paged through everyone who died in 2017. I would have preferred something more substantial too. But as far as Petty, he's the only one other than Fats and Chuck Berry who got a real tribute! As JimSheridan alluded to, Chris Stapleton and Emmy Lou Harris did Wildflowers, both of them on acoustic guitars/vocals with no other instruments. It was LOVELY! In fact I'm saving it in my DVR so I can watch it for a third time.
Petty definitely did NOT get snubbed! However, other than Petty, I can't think of anyone else who died in 2017 who was as influential in the realm of popular music as Gregg was. I think they could have had a one song tribute to Gregg as well. And what about Butch? I don't remember him even being mentioned at ALL!

I felt like they should have given Gregg the award too.....but it isn't like he was snubbed for some garbage. The winning album that beat him out is a GREAT, GREAT album and the song that beat him is one of the most original and striking songs I've heard in years. Unfortunately, the reality of it is, the category Gregg was in is, for the most part, a songwriting category. People have been flaming Gregg's songwriting output on this site for years and while his departing record was incredible (I REALLY love it), it was all covers with the exception of the co-write with Scott. I'm just playing devil's advocate here, I loved Southern Blood.....but he was beat out by a worthy opponent and probably my generation's greatest songwriter. Ain't no shame in that.......
I do think it was a shit move on the Recording Academy's party to not hit him with at least one parting Grammy......but the Recording Academy is a shit academy these days, so there's that, too.
I watched about 45 seconds of the airing. None of the music I find valid made the TV show.

i just thought the tribute to Petty was strange. Wildflowers is an OK song but playing it at that point of the show does not do justice to Tom Petty and his contributions IMO
Chuck Berry and Fats Domino got a true segment and would have seemed that Petty and Gregg would have been included there so people could have paid homage to 2 of the greats. That segment was in the heart of the show before everyone who watched was completely bored. And including Gregg and TP in the segment with the other people who passed was not justified IMO>
And as someone said, they mention all those people and Butch was not even pictured---how does that happen???
Rock and Blues are irrelevant to the general population these days and the Grammies reflected that.

While my memory is not perfect, I'm pretty confident that a picture of Butch was shown during last year's "In Memoriam" segment, due to the fact that he died early in the year, before the Grammy's aired.

Butch got a split second during last years memorial tribute.

They did a tribute to Fats Domino who IMO was nowhere of the influence of Petty and Gregg.
Fats Domino damn near invented rock n' roll. There is no bigger influence than that. He literally influenced Tom and Gregg.

Not sure i agree about Fats Domino. Chuck Berry yes but Fats Domino had a bunch of great songs which IMO dont compare to the catalogues of TP or Gregg. Anyhow it does not matter as i thought the Grammy's should have spent a few minutes giving Gregg and TP some recognition similar to Fats and Chuck Berry

I'll be in the minority here, but while I really liked Gregg's final album taking the emotions out of it being his final album I thought the Isbell album was better.
I don't connect with the Grammys as the majority of the current music show on the telecast are just not my thing, but to me the worst performance was the countrified version of "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Church, Brothers Osborne & Maren Morris. I thought the vocals were awful and appropriating song about a very specific tragedy in his life for the Vegas and Manchester tragedies wasn't the best move. Use the emotions to create your own art.
I had no problem with the Petty tribute as I thought Chris Stapleton and Emmylou Harris did a great job with Wildflowers, I do wish Gregg had been given more time, but truthfully I didn't expect it.

Taj/Mo beat out Tedeschi Trucks for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Makes sense to me. One I don't think TTB is a contemporary blues band and I'll usually take a studio album over a live album for these types of awards.

Did they mention Rick Hall in the memoriam / tribute section?
He certainly deserved it.

Or Johnny Sandlin??? RIP Johnny.

Fats was one of the original rocknrollers. FATS WAS ROCK N ROLL BEFORE THERE WAS ROCK N ROLL.
Agreed. I get everyone wants to see Gregg remembered, but Fats Domino was a freaking TITAN of early R&R. And like it or not, Tom Petty is simply more mainstream than the Allman Brothers. I'm not sure why anyone thought Gregg would get a big salute at the Grammys like he did at the CMAs last year.

Should have but no.

Egg. Zack. Lee.

I don't think its typical at all for someone like Isbell to beat Gregg. Jason isn't even signed to a record label; he's a totally independent artist.
I'm a big Isbell fan. I've been seeing him regularly since he went solo in 2007. I have tickets to both nights at the Fox in a couple weeks. That said, I don't dig his most recent release nearly as much as his previous 5. There is bone chilling stuff on Southern Blood, and I've felt that way about multiple songs on every Isbell release but less so on this one.
I was really hoping for Americana song of the year Gregg. I can see why Gregg's album might have been discounted since there were only 2 original tunes on it, though I've played his album more than Jason's....by a lot. One is really good and one is great, IMO.

Isbell's album didn't do much for me.
I can understand (but disagree)if a voter wanted to discount Gregg's album because of the lack of original songs. Americana song should have been Gregg's.
If I were king of the world things would be different...

Ditto....Not only is the show a joke, but I find the actual idea of awards for music, film, books, etc. to be so too. It seems they're nothing but marketing tools to sell more product. But hey, to each his own I suppose...
