Groovy! Some great music coming up in June...especially June 9th - David Zollo if you're interested in that...

Later this month, Coot will have the fine honor of coming to Cedar Rapids for the Tinsley Ellis show...should be a good time. I've already alerted the authorities...

That Brit Floyd show last night, not sure what my expectations were but, well, uh, they are a tribute band.

They did surprise me and play 'Not Now John' towards the end.

Good Afternoon

Could use some advice on the best way to ask the bosses for a raise.

So listened to part of How the West Was Won last night and today The Complete BBC Sessions came up on my playlist. Some good live Zeppelin. Wish they would do an archival series.

On the other hand, I also dropped off the same bouquet at one of our neighbors. She said she never gets flowers so I told her I would get her some.

Could use some advice on the best way to ask the bosses for a raise.

By no means am I any sort of expert on this subject and I have a track record to prove it.

The general wisdom is to keep the conversation completely positive.

Be prepared to highlight your contributions, what you have done to help the business achieve its goals, specific projects you have had a hand in, hopefully getting them done on time. Not sure what sort of job you have, but if you are privy to financials or have an idea of projects you've worked on and how much money they've saved the company, that sort of thing helps.

Talk about any training you have given to fellow workers, any things you have helped with outside the basic scope of your responsibilities.

Also things that are coming up, how you intend to attack upcoming projects.

Stay away from personal finance or tales of woe with your checking account, keep it about how good of an employee you are and how you contribute to the company.

Just one man's opinion.

Edit: no matter how tempting it may seem, do not, I repeat, do not threaten to leave if they don't get you a raise - unless you are totally prepared to be shown the door, maybe immediately. Sad as it may seem, they do hold the upper hand and always will.

A radio guy I once listened to, Neil Boortz told a caller one day, who kept saying "my job this and my job that" - he said, "Lady it is not your job. It is your company's job that they are allowing you to do." As harsh as that sounds, it is true.

Another quick story, a coworker was contemplating retirement. He was a valued member of the team but had a bit of a bad attitude. He approached the bosses and sort of sprang his retirement on them, but said he'd be willing to work part time as a contractor or whatever. I'm not retelling it correctly but they said no and let him 'retire' pretty quickly.

Later I heard that it was all his approach, the boss said it felt like an ultimatum and that the boss felt he was being "held over a barrel" by this guy and didn't like it. All in the attitude and approach. Had he approached it differently, they may have considered it.

So, avoid negativity, don't act like the place will crumble without you (unless you can prove it somehow,) accentuate all your positives.

Hello everybody. Happy weekend!

Got let go today. They gave me 10 minutes after they told me my contract wasn't going to be renewed. I knew it was up but I didn't see this coming. They would have had to pay more for me. There were some signs I guess. Wish they would have given me a LITTLE notice.

Got to say goodbye to my two closest colleagues but nobody else.

Tough world out there sometimes.
