Every year some teams feel that way. Personally, I would rather play in the NIT where I have a chance to win game(s) than being a sure immediate out in the NCAA.
And Illinois St. DID have the 123rd best schedule in the country so I guess you could argue they didn't deserve an invite anyway. 123rd...
