Seeing the posts on the new DTRB track made me wonder. The download services complain they don't make any money on downloads, some artists (I believe that includes the ABB) have sued because they don't get what they say is a fair share. That makes it sound like the label takes the lion's share.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

It breaks down like this

For major label artists, Apple collects 34 cents
the label keeps 55 cents.

The artist gets 10 cents

If that's the case, since I refuse to use iTunes, I will continue trading shows and give Derek a dime this Friday... or maybe .02 to each of the band members... then they won't have to pay tax on the proceeds.

How does that compare to who gets what if you buy it off the shelf at a music store?

When the artist gets only 10% of the proceeds of something HE /SHE created, something is terribly wrong with the system.

Apple says iTunes is "better than free" because it's "fair to the artists and record labels." That's simply not true. First of all, Apple gets 3 times as much money as musicians from each sale. Apple takes a 35% cut from every song and every album sold, a huge amount considering how little they have to do. Record labels receive the other 65% of each sale. Of this, major label artists will end up with only 8 to 14 cents per song, depending on their contract. Many of them will never Artists Get Ripped Off. even see this paltry share because they have to pay for producers and recording costs, both of which can be enormous. Until the musician "recoups" these costs, when you buy an iTunes song, the label gives them nothing.

The major beef I have with itunes is the quality of the music. What I dislike even more is no cover art, no credits, lyrics, nothing. Isn't it a compressed format, like an MP3? If I buy a CD in a music store, do I get a better recording? Can someone shed some light please.

10% is better than most of the old "big time record contracts".

hey BDOB - until the artists start risking their own money, this will always be the case. kind of like the person who seeks venture capital and ends up selling a big stake of their intellectual property.

i like that derek produced his own record and used his own studio. that will lead to bigger profit margins since he took on the risk. once they fulfill their commitment to Sony, maybe they should distriute themselves so that they see the 65%. but then you lose a distributor with ties and relationships.

i use and love itunes. simple and easy. music quality is fine since i'm not the audiophile i used to be.

it could "approach" being fair if the labels were cut out of the equation... I can't tell you the last time advertising or promotion led me to buy an album or goto a concert. I either get that info from artists websites (which are not that costly to run) or from venues I sign up to receive upcoming show information from. In fact, if I see big promotion of a band I probably think its going to be regurgitated rock/pop/RnB whatever and I stay away from it.

Apples rhetoric is disgusting. but they do carry the cost of bandwidth and storage space (which is not a PC holding some mp3's)... Data Centers cost big money. If apple took 35cents and the rest went to the artist, that would be close to fair. Labels front money for studio time and promotion but expect the artist to repay them which is ridiculous since the label takes the lions share.

the main beef I have with qaulity is not the codec (mp3/aac) used... its the gawd awful compression!

Haha, I am not an Apple fan either.

I buy downloads from amazon.com when I do buy them, but I usually get physical cd's. There are plenty of other options than Apple though!

Buy the stock, sell it in a few months or sometime next year. that way your gun will be free.

b/c of steve jobs and apple, artists will make more than they otherwise would have.

I'm not sure how the download payment system works. I don't know how a writer would stay on top of sales. Some artists that don't write make their money from touring, and merchandising. The way I understand royalty payments is 50% to the music publisher, and 50% to the songwriter. If you do write, have your own publishing company.

being around teens a lot, I see about a 2:1 ratio of 'file sharing' sites like limewire to Itunes. Concerning because they are the next generation of music purchasers....

Who makes the decision about it being available on itunes? The artist? The Label?

Most likely the label. Artists don't have much say in anything once they are signed to a label. who said slavery was still illegal?
