My main tower would not come on this morning. Everything was fine last night but nothing happened this morning as I tried to turn the damn thing on. Has anyone else had this problem before and if so what was the result? I have all my business files such as CAD drawings, job cost sheets, etc on there that I need to retrieve. Hell right now this blows.

Any and all advice is welcomed.

Now for some humor. Sending your best shows is optional.

TOugh to say without having my hands on it.

Venturing a guess I would say the power supply is toast.

Fairly easy to replace, just swapped out one for my Dad.

wotts right,

sounds like the power supply. you have no lights, no noise inside, right? none of the fans start? you can always take off the cover and see if anything is moving too.

If nothing lights up, its you power supply. they are only about $40 - $50 bucks. In this case i recommend a professional to replace it, unless you can keep track of where everything is plugged into the motherboard. You can do it yourself if you like that kind of thing...if not you have to pay a shop to do it and pay up to $100 for labor.

if you want to replace it yourself, a quick tip: Take digital pictures of the insides before you unplug all the stuff unless you have the motherboard diagrams.

You should also check the obvious- make sure the power cable is properly seated in the computer and the wall, as well as plugging something else into the outlet, to make sure it has power. Swapping the cable is also an easy test.

what he said.

and Dan, this is as good a time as any to tell you to backup. this time it could be the power supply, but next time it could be your (gasp!) HARD DRIVE

on the power supply thing, if you have an HP/Compaq desktop it will be more than $40/50 and you cannot buy a replacement generic power supply from Compusa. Compaq and HP have propietary connectors that connect to the mother board, and you need to get their power supplies, not a generic.

That is why I don't buy HP/Compaq anymore :-)

Well it seems to be the power supply. Luckily we had another computer not being used and my wife installed the "important" hard drive as a slave. I guess we better back everything up. It's funny in this dire time the only thing that I could remember was my password to this site.

Thanks for all the advice. You folks are great.

Now about those shows?

yes, but she did just save you a service call to get your data right away, which means you now have a few extra bucks for more ABB shows!

I just stopped buying pre-made computers... not everyone can do that (especially if you are someone who needs tech support)... they are called standards for a reason...

Same here, and I hate to work on HP and IBM. Bet I got you beat on how long I've been doing it though.

I had this same problem once on another machine and it turned out to be that the thin wire from the power switch to the connection on the MB came loose and just needed to be reseated. May want to check that before ordering a new power supply.
