All of you have probably heard the news about the new iPhone, announced at the Mac World conference last week. What you may or may not have caught at the time is that Apple also announced a product they're calling Apple TV. This is a set-top box that plugs into your TV and allows you to get video from your computer(s) over a home network connection (802.11n) to the device for viewing on your TV/home stereo.

In addition, Sling media, makers of the Sling box, have announced the new Sling Catcher - also capable of getting video from computers onto TVs.

Haven't heard the price for the Sling Catcher, but the Apple TV will list for less than $300. Two very good options for getting Moogis on your TV without having to move anything around.

Neither of these will be shipping before the Beacon run, but both will be out this year. This means that the competition is now on, and I'll bet you'll see open source projects (most likely a small version of Linux + MythTV) showing up to compete with these very soon.

Another thing to consider is: all three of the next gen consoles (XBox 360, PS3, Wii) have built in wireless network adapters, all three have online marketplaces for downloading content (including HD movies), and all 3 allow for content to be imported via portable media. They even have web browser support. It is not entirely out of the question that one of these platforms could server for the purposes of delivering Moogis to your TV.

My analysis of all of this is, Moogis is launching at the exact right time to take advantage of this advance in technology. I already know people who have canceled their cable TV and Tivo subscriptions and get all their TV entirely through the various IPTV / DVD offerings. The time of on-demand, a-la-carte IP based home entertainment is at hand, and Moogis is right on the cutting edge.

So, recapping, your Moogis-to-TV options are currently looking like:

Computer + video card with sVideo, DVI, or HDMI
Next gen gaming platform (XBox 360, PS3, Wii) (needs to be tested)
Apple TV
Sling Catcher
Microsoft Media Center PC
Mac with Front Row
Linux PC with MythTV

No reason not to vote yes, folks.

Yes!Yes!Yes!~I am still so ready for MOOGIS!!

How is everything coming along?
Will this years Beacon run be available at the same time of the Beacon run or later?
What about Wanee?
Do you think MOOGIS will be capturing that musical experience for everyone to view, too?

thank you vaylor...

it's getting easier all the time with ways out there for most people to be able to hook up in a variety of methods so they can use the one that suits them best... (I have the first and the third - and if my will control is low I may add the second one as well )

Peace
Ross

Vaylor,

I just got a PSP... it's wifi. I assume I can access the site and listen to the shows. Correct?

-Are these shows only going to be streamed or available for download?

-I have an Xbox360...will the shows be available on Xbox Marketplace?

For those of you who have read this far and still haven't seen Vaylor's band Bonobos Convergence yet, let me say this:

Vaylor is as good a guitar player as he is a technology guru! Check it out if you need proof...

it seemed like they were talking about streaming only... but I don't know if thats been finalized...

I highly doubt it will be available in the Xbox marketplace due to them having to deal with MS to get the content on there... more than likely, you should be able to use the web browsing feature of the xbox360 to goto the website and stream the content... again, this may not have been finalized yet...

Vaylor will probably know if those abilities are going to be available.

Peace
Ross

I gotcha Ross. That makes sense... using Windows Media Center on my Xbox to access the site. I can then watch it on my tv and in 5.1 surround sound.

Sweet. Where do I pay?

Rosshmusic said it exactly. The thing about all of the next gen consoles is that all of them have web browsers. The only question unanswered is: to what degree are these browsers locked into the offerings presented by the marketplace / online gaming features - which is why I added the caveat of "needs testing".

As for a PSP - sure. In short - any device with a browser and media player should work.

I was looking at Apple TV which looks pretty cool. The one thing that concerns me is that Apple keeps mentioning that you use iTunes to view anything. Can you use iTunes to view Moogis? The liitle bit I see when I go the Moogis site is this option to change player. Anyone know what this means? Can you use different viewers, Quicktime, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, etc?
Also Apple is saying Apple TV will ship in February. In time for Beacon if you can use it.

I have no idea what Vaylor is saying but it all sounds good .....too advanced for this old lady, though....so I'll just enjoy MOOGIS on my computer....(my television is also old like I am so I'm sure that it does not have all of the connections that I would need in order to hook up all of these boxes and things....)

I voted yes for Moogis. Does that mean I can view the Beacon shows over my computer? How do I hook up?

Where's the web browser on my 360?

WB, Do you have a computer that has MS Media Center? If so, you can pair your xbox to that computer wireless and access the internet. I tried it once and it was pretty slow and a PITA. But that was when I had a weak wireless signal. I need to try again. Also, I'd recommend a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Eileen, we still do not know if there is enough interest in MOOGIS for them to do it.

If you (or anyone) has not voted YES yet, please go to Home Page to vote ...or click on this YES link!!

well, voting yes is just registering your interest... after they get enough interest I'm sure they will have a sign up (with payment) on the web site...

as far as hooking up, there are many ways to do this... the most common will probably be using a TV out connector on your computer to connect to your TV... alternately you can just watch on your computer screen... but if you would like to use your home TV/Stereo then a couple of cables might be all thats needed...

do you know if your computer has a video out connector that you could connect to your TV?

for sound you can use a 1/8" stereo to dual RCA adapter to run the audio to your stereo... this will give you basic stereo... alternately you can use a digital out from your computer/soundcard if one is available to connect to a digital in on your home stereo...

the best bet for being accurate is for you to post the make and models of your TV/Stereo and computer... and we can proceed from there...

I installed the software for Media Center... it works. Now I need a wireless mouse/keyboard so I can navigate the internets.

I had this site on a 50" hdtv. Looked pretty good.
