Looks like the wife and I are joining the iPod/mp3 player crowd this Christmas. Questions to any kind brothers and sisters who may have the answers -

***If you purchase from the Apple family of iPods, do you have to use itunes only as a source of songs or can you use Napster or some other source as well?

***Besides cost and brand name, is there that much difference between an iPod and any other type of mp3 player? I'm not really that interested in Podcasts and such, just want something to listen to while working out, cleaning, etc...

In my opinion...

The non Apple players are cheaper and as feature rich or in some cases more feature rich than ipods, but...

Apple has itunes, which is a huge library. I might be wrong but I think you have to have an ipod to download from itunes...again, I might be wrong here.

You can load your CD's, tunes from itunes and any other .mp3 or music file you have on your computer to your ipod.

My family now has two ipods and are happy with them.

technically you can play itunes purchased music on non-ipod players... you do HAVE to buy them through itunes but you can use the following program to remove the drm from the files...

http://hymn-project.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=9565
this program basically plays back all you drm'd AAC files (the format apple uses) and saves them as drm-free AAC files that are playable on anything that plays AAC files (you can transcode but it loses quality when you do this - unless you are going to FLAC/WAV)... the only inconvenience is that it takes playing them in real time to save them as unprotected files... I've used this with several albums I had trouble finding anywhere else...

itunes is a necessity to set up syncing with the ipod. You can't get around that part. You may be able to take mp3 files and convert them to Apple's format, then load them into itunes so they will play on your ipod - but I haven't done it (others may be able to help with that question)

There certainly are other good solutions out there, but Apple has such a lead it's almost ridiculous not to go with them. Their OS is certainly one of, if not THE best, of any of the devices. And ease of use is a big part of the reason they dominate - which is directly tied to the OS.

If you really want to get the most out of any of these players, look into some decent replacement earpieces. The ones that come with most all of these devices are almost always horrible. Your ipod can sound great - it's just going to take a set of earpieces that will probably cost as much, if not more, than the player itself.

not true...

there are many methods available... I have one friend who uses rockbox firmware on his ipod, but I don't recommend that as it is that seamless...

there are other methods and another friend uses is this:
http://lifehacker.com/software/feature/hack-attack-the-selfsustaining-ipod- 151662.php
there are a number of more ways but this one is very popular... this buddy buy's from itunes... takes the copy protection off with QTFairuse (I linked above)... and manages whats on his ipod with this system... he does so because he listens alot at work but can't install anything (including itunes) on his work system... this lets him copy to and from his ipod at work...

part of the above method is even listed in the itunes/ipod help pages at apple's website.. though they don't go into using the other software as every company wants to push their own solution... here is there page about managing your music manually:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148

all they pretty much leave out is how to add the new songs to your ipod library, which is actually coivered in many different programs... you can google "ipod hacks" or "manage ipod without itunes" and you'll come up with a number of solutions... most won't be as painless as itunes, but some will be better depending on your usage...

Very cool - thanks for the info on options. Looks like you have to work a little harder but you could run the ipod drm-free by doing a little extra work.

I bought the kids Ipods last Christmas. After researching all other mp3 players I decided to go with the Ipod. Ease of use and accessories that are made for it. It is really easy to setup and you can convert all your music to the apple format.

My wife wants one know. I know what I am getting her for Christmas

just an fyi... the only real "apple" format is ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec)... their lossy compression is AAC which was not developed by apple... AAC wrapped up with their drm is what you buy from the itunes store...

I believe in choices... thats all, apple makes good stuff, but without competition you end up with nobody looking out for the consumer... I recommended my pops get an ipod cause he's computer illiterate, but anyone I believe is able I make other recommendations... whatever you get, just enjoy the music...

Hi Ross-son *waving*

We finally got a few of them ipods. I bought the 30gb for myself and we bought Shelby the 8gb for his birthday. I'm still trying to figure the thing out. He has a pretty good handle on them as far as downloading, etc. so I just tell him what music I want on and he'll go and get it for me. I haven't done any pics or video yet...

One problem we did have is after updating/recharging mine (we haven't bought a "real" docking/recharging station yet so we count on the computer right now) mine went out.

It said 'do not unplug' with the red/slash circle but only AFTER he plugged his into the computer. It basically froze and the only thing we could do was wait for my battery to die and then re-load it because it also wiped out my library. Me thinks that wasn't a good thing.

Any ideas or comments, anyone ??? Oh and we use the same computer at home for this, or I should say that Shelby does

Later, Karen

my biggest complaint about the itunes store is they don't tell you that until you download the files.
You can set your preferences for lossless, but they send you the lossy files anyway.
