I may be a little behind in times. I have been checking out the audio/video
ipods. If you own one, how has your experience been with it. Any pros/cons.
I am interested because I may be able to reduce some clutter around my theater/stereo
system. Can you download your personal music videos or movies with ease? I like the
wireless feature through the FM receiver. How is that sound quality? I also like the idea of downloading CD's and storing the original copy to preserve. I also have a 400 CD changer
that has me a little worried. It was only 300 bucks but if someone steals it one day. Add up the CD costs............man, thats a chunk of change. I feel I could secure my collection a little better with the Ipod. Comments are welcome.

then again, you might not notice...

I consider the video more of a fake feature because it's so small... but it can be useful for movies on a plane... but music videos wouldn't be worth it IMO...

then again... I'm on the fence about supporting Apple products until they quit trying to play the sony game and lock everything down to there proprietary standards... and start implementing correct tagging of files... and add replaygain support...

They have recently implemented gapless playback but it seems to be a hacked way of doing so... but if it works then I spose they at least made the effort...

I've had a 4th generation ipod for about two years now. I travel a fair amount (on a plane about 3 times a month), and the ipod has been such a blessing in making air travel more bearable. I'll explain how, and what I consider to be the most important part of the purchase - the earpieces.

I don't want to offend anyone who is perfectly happy with the ones that come with the player, but to my ears they are total, useless crap for even coming close to decent musical reproduction. I'm a bit spoiled in this regard as I have no doubt spent well into six-figures over the years on audio gear and software (LP's, CD's, etc). I'm reasonably critical about good sound, while at the same time knowing that years of concerts and playing drums has lessened my sensitivity considerably. Even taking that into account, the standard ipod earpieces lasted about 15 seconds in my ears before I laughingly took them out.

There are lots of decent up-market earpeices, but most of the good ones will cost about the same - or more - than the ipod itself. But believe me, its worth it. It's the same theory of speakers being the most important part of your stereo.

Anyway, I went whole-hog with a pair of Ultimate Ears. These are the same as what you see many performers wearing as they've ditched the stage monitors in favor of an in-ear system. They are custom fit to each person. You visit a audiologist to get an impression of your ear canals made (they squirt a foam into your ears that slowly hardens). The impressions are sent to the company who makes a set of earpieces custom moulded to your ear canal.

Not only is the sound incredible, but because the fit is perfect you hardly hear anything else around you. In my case, that makes flying much more enjoyable. No more screaming babies, no more overhearing loudmouth conversations - heck; I can hardly hear the sound of the plane. Most folks will never know just how good their ipod can sound. Invest in decent earpieces and you'll be very happy.

Yea... I don't have the cusom molded ones... but I have a pair of the shure E3's (still in ear canal type) and they make all the difference in the world... the ones that came with my iAudio U3 didn't even last 15 seconds

I've got an iPod Nano and it is awesome. It's just unbelievably convenient to have so much music in a portable device. Thumbs up, big time.

I'm another satisfied iRiver fan, with a 40 Gig model. I went with the iriver, because like Ross above, I don't like Apple's intention of locking you into everything Apple.

My guess is no matter whose player you get, if your music is important to you, you will be pleased. And yes, by all means upgrade the headphones. And if you want to download music, make sure you can burn it or play it where you want. Apple in particular has restrictions of how many copies you can burn, etc.

With the iRiver and most other non-Apple products copying music to your player is easily accomplished with your Windows or Mac operating system. If you don't have any of your CD's burned to your computer, you will need some time to do that. Although lossless encoding is the ideal, most of us (self included) cannot tell the difference. With 400 CD's you will need a 40 gig player and would probably not be able to get everything on your player without using a compressed format like MP3.

In your home, you are better off using a line-out or headphone jack to wire your player to your stereo, since most FM transmitters are mediocre at best. If your car raido has an auxiliary input you can use your player there too and put an end to crappy FM programming.

The world of digital music is pretty cool, there's definitely something magical about carrying your entire music collection in the palm of your hand!!

I have a second generation one and I love it, but the battery blows. I think they have since staraightened out that problem. There was a class action lawsuit about it and I received the info in order to get the $50 for the new battery, but of course never did anything about it.

I agree about the headphones. The first thing I did was chuck the ones that came with it and got different ones. It may be time to upgrade even further after reading Fujirich's post.

The thing i REALLY hate about Apple is that even if you set your ITUNES preferences to apples
lossless compression, if you BUY a download from ITUNES you only get the lossy mp4 compression.

They are too cheap to pay for the bandwidth to do lossless compression for downloads.

And THEY DON"T TELL YOU THAT UNTIL AFTER YOUR DOWNLOAD IS PAID FOR.

Cheap bastids.

So what you are saying is the IPODS are good but get good ear phones. What type of earphones do you like?

The ear piece molds is a pretty good idea. I cant get most earpieces to stay in
my ears. I do a lot of camping/hiking. If it is car camping I lug the cd player, and
a mini DVD player. We can't do without the music sitting around the fire at night.
Nothing like playing the Mule, DTB and ABB Beacon DVD out in the middle of nowhere.
Any problems getting DVD's out of your personal collection downloaded into it.

This one seems to be more versatile. I like the memory card feature. I also like the built in mic and recording feature. I wonder if that is just for Radio or can a short video be shot, similar to a digital camera. Thanks rosshmusic,.

I appreciate everyone doing my homework for me.......lol Its kind of asking about the space shuttle. If you dont have some experience with it, you dont know what to ask.....

it will not record video...

the page says it records in three ways...

quote:
With the built-in, high-fidelity microphone, iAUDIO can recordvoice at the level of dedicated voice recorders. You can record important meetings or lectures using this feature.

quote:
iAUDIO provides direct encoding by which you can record output from an external audio device at a 1:1 ratio. This means that you can connect the recording terminal and the output terminal of an external audio device with a bi-directional stereo cable for recording. Using this feature, you can receive the direct input from audio devices such as a walkman, MD (mini disk), old LP phonograph, or TV, and record them with iAUDIO.

quote:
Listen to FM radio and record it by pressing a button, instantly. Play them back on iAUDIO, or save to your computer. Also has a preset feature which allows you to save your preferred radio stations as channel numbers..

The built in mic can only record at 128kbps.
the line in you can record up to 320kbps.
the built in mic records in mono

try this site for a great bit of info on these players...

well... it's only 2GB... but I wanted a flash device (not Hard Drive Based since I knew it would get joggled around a lot - not a good thing for hd's)...

but I've been super happy with mine - I guess I'd rather have a rocker panel instead of a thumb stick but I've never had any problems...

My favorite thing I found is that in using my Shure E3's I can mow the lawn and still keep the volume around where I would when listening in a quiet enviornment... this is not because of the player itself but the in ear canal design of the ear phones... I use the disposable foam inserts (though I've been thiking of getting a custom set made)...

no more cd's its great...... right now i have about 30g's of music on it...
I use it on my harley.. i'm never without sounds rolling down the hyway...
it took alittle while to get used to downloading shows, as you have to be exact with your labeling shows.......the slightest miss cue and you have to fix it, but now i'm a master almost....not sure how to update without updating the whole library, but give me time..
i'm just worried if i want to add a show from somebody elses computer....

The 30 and 60 GB iPods just came down in price ($249 and $279) when the 80GB iPods were released. Don't have one yet, but I use my Palm Life Drive (4GB with a 2 GB card).

Love the convenience. Bought a decent set of Sony noise cancelling headphones for about $80 when I was traveling by air a lot. Very good at knocking out the background white noise.

while I pondered over which to get. Claimed it was a anniversary present. Right...lol.
At least I can look over her shoulder now and test drive the ipod 80gb a little............lol

Love ya sis...........
