Just saw #20 was I'm No Angel...it's on right now as I'm typing...I'm sure there'll be more abb related songs on the countdown.

I was watching some of the CMT comedy stuff and this followed a Ron White special.

It was cool to see the brothers represented 3 times - Gregg w/I'm no Angel, and then the full band w/ Midnight Rider at #6 and Ramblin' Man at #2.

Skynyrd took #3 and #1 w/ Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama, respectively.

Charlie Daniels had two on there, and I think the MTB had two tunes as well.

I thought the final three would have been 1. freebird, 2, ramblin' man, 3. the devil went down to Georgia.

I was wrong. You ever been wrong? It happened to me.

I wonder what the selection criteria were. Probably just a couple of guys sitting down and deciding what they figured were the top 20 tunes.

I much rather would have heard the full tunes, instead of little snippets with all that inane commentary thrown in.

The dude from Poison must really need work.

Actually, the top 20 "southern rock songs" list should have been populated with lets say 19 ABB tunes and maybe a skynrd tune or a MTB tune or Jimmy Reed with the wet willy tune.....SHA as number one???? I dont think so/////

The ABB is not Southern Rock but Ramblin Man is Southern Rock. It is this song more than any other that helped define the sound of Southern Rock. This is not the ABB's best song but, along with the borderline Blue Sky, it is their best "southern rock" song. I'm No Angel is defintely not a Southern Rock song, unless they mean any song indigeneous to the South in which case they would count REM.

Labels are inherently problematic.
Legend has it that the term "heavy metal" was first used in reference to Jimi Hendrix. I doubt that it still fits.
I'm not sure of the origin of the "southern rock" label, but I just watched a clip of Gregg, Dickey and Butch on Tom Snyder from the early 90s where Butch, in response to the inane but inevitable "What do you call your music" question, says "Southern Rock". He goes on to say, and I'm paraphrasing, you have to give people who don't know the music some idea of what to expect.
Fair enough, and his opinion is good enough for me.

Anyway, I think that, though it's fun to discuss CMT and their list, these lists are self serving and only function to promote the "judges", CMT and the big record companies. They do little for the artists or fans.
Wouldn't it have been much more interesting and relevant if the "judges" were fans, or better yet, musicians of the genre.

Greatest "Southern Rock" songs?

Tutti-Frutti; Good Golly, Miss Molly; Lucille (haven't even cracked the list yet!) - "Little Richard" Penniman

Great Balls of Fire; Whole Lotta Shakin', - Jerry Lee Lewis

Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins

Little Sister; Follow that Dream; - Elvis Presley

Rock Lobster - the B-52s (okay, now I'm being a smart-@ss!)

Radio Free Europe; Driver 8; South Pacific Rain - REM

I Won't Back Down; American Girl - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

The Letter - the Boxtops

On top of all of these - add the entire ABB catalog!

If you look on the back of the LP Brothers of The Road...maybe its Reach For The Sky, there is a big long schpeil about "Southern Rock" as an accepted art form. Me, I always said the ABB just play music. Damn good too.

Joey, under the post in question, hit the "Quote" button. That will put the whole post in a posting message box in indented, ruled-off quote form for you, like above. Otherwise, the message box is a regular one, so you can add your own message to it.

Another way to quote is like so, although the order of steps isn't completely important:
1. Hit "Post Reply" as usual to get a message box.
2. Select and copy the passage you want to quote (from another post; if you have another window open, from another thread or another site, etc.).
3. Paste the passage into your message box.
4. Select the quoted material and hit the "quote" icon above the message box; it's the yellow cartoon "speech" bubble third from the right. This should put the html tags "{quote}" and "{/quote}" (only with square brackets) around the selected material, so it'll come out in quote format.
5. Add your own comments.
6. Hit "Preview Post" to make sure it's coming out the way you want. Adjust the quote tags if necessary.
7. Hit "Post Reply."

Re the order: You could do the steps in this order, for example: 2, 1, icon for "quote" tags, paste quoted material between tags, etc.
Also, you can always type the quote tags in manually.

Just to see what's going on (not necessarily to quote me in a reply), hit the "Quote" button under this post and check out the tags in the passage below. Things to note:

1. Sometimes you want to eliminate extra line spaces from the message box so the message comes out compact. Compare line space after Elvis to that around Tom Petty.

2. You can shorten someone's quote, though you should indicate so by ". . ." or something if you take their words out of the middle. See Little Richard below.

3. You can put quotes inside of quotes, but you have to preview to make sure everything comes out balanced, or nested the way you intend. See B-52s and REM.

Rusty, I'm only replying as a demonstration, but of course, what you have here is rock 'n' roll from the South, not Southern rock.

Rock Lobster - the B-52s (okay, now I'm being a smart-@ss!)
"This record shook up the snoozing world of rock in 1979."
"The B-52's added a welcome shot of humour to the post-punk scene from 1979 onwards. Not only did they look kitchy and weird in an over-the-top 1960s type of way, their sound was something quite distinctive and they wrote great songs."

Radio Free Europe; Driver 8; South Pacific Rain - REM
"Its {it's} not all there {their} best but who cares its {it's} still awesome. There {their}worst songs are better than almost anything. Overall I like it alot {a lot}."

Uh, college rock from Georgia, not Southern rock.

quote:
I Won't Back Down; American Girl - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Jangly washing machine rock from Florida.
quote:
The Letter - the Boxtops
Hoarse pop, with sound effects, from Memphis.
quote:
On top of all of these - add the entire ABB catalog!
Southern rock, hard rock, blues, blues-rock, jazz, jazz-rock, country, country-rock, R&B, Arista pop--what else? Any pure rock 'n' roll? Pure funk besides an Oteil solo?

End of tutorial! I suppose there's a FAQ somewhere that would have sufficed.

no one claimed it to be on that show. They simply said it was the second best "southern rock" song. Gregg has said he hates the term southern rock. He said it's like rock rock b/c it all came from the south to begin with.
