Is this another ploy to rip into Dickey ( that's how ya spell his name ) I hope not. He is great and I still miss him with the ABB. I still have faith that maybe" someday " even it's a farewell tour with just a few dates that the missing piece will be added to complete the picture ...song....for all to hear and rejoice in. Waitin on that day

It's something that should & probably will happen -- but not before the current lineup calls it quits & there's some sort of event in which all the "alumni" are called back for a final get together or two -- personality conflicts aside, these guys are about MUSIC first & foremost -- just got the Nassau Colesium archive set, & personally I'd love to see six-way jam w/the ABB with Dickey on cuts like Jessica (w/Chuck) & Elizabeth Reed (Warren or Derek) before it's all done -- also, no slighting Marc in any way shape or form, he's the longest-standing member after Gregg, Butch & Jaimoe but I'd really like to hear the latter two pound out a solo by themselves before it's all done too.

Again, however, Dickey will almost certainly not be back before this lineup retires -- and why not. I love Dickey, but these seven musicians have more than kept this band's reputation alive & growing as the best damn band in the land -- especially on stage -- rock, jazz, blues, whatever, the Allmans are the best -- the term Zambi coined some time back is perfect -- BLUESION.

Reminds me of this classic from Woody Allen's "Side Effects" essay "Exerpts from the Allen Notebooks"

"Will I marry M? Not unless she tells me the other letters of her name."

There was also this gem:

"Thought for the day: Why does man kill? He kills for food. And not just food. Frequently there must be a beverage."

Yes he will, but it might not be till the ultimate road trip, then Gregg and Dickey get pulled up their on a cloud and tranported to the Mount of Olives where they both answer to the ultimate authority. The good news is Duane will be in the band that follows that re-union, and everyone will be Back Where It All Begins.

Did he finally quit drinking/using? I know Gregg did (miracles still happen) and not to preach, I know from experience
that it's a real pain to have to work with someone with an attitude/alcohol problem after you've "changed your way of livin"".

My question is -- With "Hittin' the Note" album and the Beacon DVD I noticed neither carried any Dickie tunes. I saw them here & aside from "Southbound", again no Dickie songs. I got a live CD just to hear Derek & Warren do "Liz Reed" on it, but my question is, do the ABB play many R.Betts- authored songs anymore & what's the policy on that?

Dobro, there was this matter of songwriting ownership which came up as one of the sticking points after the infamous FAX and estrangement between the band. Could be related to that.

Wrong again gina.

They play what they want, when they want.

I saw three shows last summer.

Got "Jessica" twice.

"Southbound" twice.

Too lazy to compare the setlists, but I think you'll find plenty of "DB" songs played throughout the summer.

To answer your question DobroDen, When "Hittin' The Note" came out Dickey was no longer in the ABB so there would not be any of his songs on it. Like Ron said, they still do some classic tunes, especially instrumentals like Jessica, that Dickey wrote.

As for Dickey rejoining the band...

The ABB now play Dickey songs without any hesitation whatsoever. Included regularly this past year was Jessica, Liz Reed, Les Brers in A Minor, Revival, Southbound, and even the ocassional Bluesky.

At the Jones Beach Show alone they did Revival, Jessica and encored with Southbound.

Okay, I know they play Dickey songs in "concert", but I was wonderin' what the policy was. I don't believe you'll find any DB tunes on their "official" live Beacon DVD or CD "One Way Out", maybe because it requires permission. I know they have to pay royalties to DB when they play his instrumentals in live sets (union rules).
It's kind of like John Fogarty with CCR or Paul McCartney with Beatles' tunes. Neither owns the rights to their old songs & while they can play them, they don't record 'em 'cause it galls them to have to pay royalties to the business types who own the published rights to the songs.
As far as I can tell, if say "Liz Reed" showed up on the Beacon DVD, then Dickey would get a major percentage of the new album, as he does (rightfully so) of the older ABB album sales.
But hey, I'm no attorney... this is too much for my layman's mind to grasp.

someone posted a while back that he has spelled his name about five different ways in album liner notes. Check them.

I think that the band has evolved a great deal without Dickey and is playing some amazing music right npw. As for Dickey, I wish he could do a few shows with the ABB but I feel it is highly unlikely.

Dickey is still a great guitarist even without the ABB.

There's no getting over it 77ABBhaynes -- while everyone is definitely settled on the fact that Dickey won't tour with the ABB again, the TOPIC of it from a discusson standpoint ain't goin' anywhere -- there's too much of Dickey in the ABB for that to happen.
The ABB, and Dickey too for that matter, only have about four of five years of touring left in their gas tanks -- I'm really looking forward to when they have that one final play -- I'm sure all the weirdness will be water over the dam by then -- who knows, maybe Gregg, Butch and Jaimoe will show up unannounced at one of Dickey's small-venue shows -- that's how it happened in '78, at Central Park.

One never knows -- enjoy them while they're still here. The combination of the two is a killer -- just wait til they put the wraps on it all! It would be lovely to see it done in a sort of Last Waltz/Wanee kind of way -- with Dickey, Berry Oakley's and Lamar Williams's sons and Rook all having a play on bass, the roadies from all the eras taking a bow, Chuck Leavell, Dangerous Dan, Jack Pearson, David Grissom -- everybody who's had a hand in making this band what it is.

That's not for now though, there's still MUCH music left before then!!
