Anyone know why tolerance to drinking goes way down in some people? My uncle used to be able to drink all night and still talk to people and they'd not know he was the slightest bit drunk. I think he drank every day of his life, and not just one or two. But lately, you'll see him & he'll have (no kidding) two drinks and he's slurring his words and can hardly walk, and after 4 or 5 he's useless...and I always think, where's the guy that used to be able to drink 15 beers and not show it at all?

Is it just an age thing?

No

Drinking evey day of your life is the culprit. The damage to the brain cells is cumulative.

While it's true that body mass, age, and 'cumulative brain cell damage' are factors in one's being able to tolerate drinking.....metabolism has much to do with how a body processes alcohol, and as you grow older your metabolism often changes therefore altering the manner in which you react to the alcohol you've just consumed.

I think lyricwriter is probably onto something. Also, heavy drinking over a long time will definitely affect your liver, and that'll make a big difference.

I've heard that you body learns to accept the effects of alcohol and thus you feel less drunk than you actually are. Remember the first time you got drunk, and it only took a beer and a half? Well, according to what I heard (who knows if it's true or not), if you have two beers now (later in life) your body is still as drunk as you were the first time, but your body is used to the effects. Again, who know if it's true, but it seems fairly logical!

Thats sort of it....Your body develops a tolerance...i.e., you begin to feel the effects less with the same amount of liquor. So you arent necessarily drunk but dont feel drunk, its just that it takes more to make you drunk. Of course, your liver still takes the damage the same, so by building up a tolerance, you are still killing yourself.

Right about all that; however what about dramatically lowered tolerance after years of high tolerance...
