I've compiled a Playlist collecting Dickey's country-ish stuff from the 72-75 era, aka the "Richard" Betts years. So far I've got:

ABB--
Blue Sky
Melissa
Ramblin' Man
Jessica
Pony Boy
Just Another Love Song
Louisana Lou etc
Sweet Mama

Solo---
The entire Highway Call album

Guest appearances--
Long Haired Country Boy (CDB)
Kiss the Blues Goodbye (Grinderswitch)
Hey Good Lookin' (Elvin Bishop)
Searchin for a Rainbow (MTB)

Can anyone think of anything I'm missing? As of now I'm not including live stuff, but I've got the Winterland show and Volunteer Jam '75 if I change my mind about that. Thought about including Bougainvillea, but haven't decided if it fits my "theme". I can be weird about stuff like that LOL.

Anyhow, this is a pleasant 90 minutes, slightly longer than a cd. Feel free to steal it for yourself.

Melissa?? - hehe
List looks awesome - so leave it to me to jump the tracks & mention 11/3/74 Hempstead NY radio show - thatís real countryish (bluegrass) too

I only recently decided to add that one. I was initially avoiding Gregg songs but that guitar is too sweet to leave out. I'm thinking I should probably add Win Lose or Draw too.

Haven't decided if I'm adding Great Southern but if I do I'm thinking

Bougainvillea
The Way Love Goes
Shady Streets

And if I do that I may as well add Nancy too! This is gonna turn into a box set before I'm done

Gotcha, was thinking songs Dickey wrote/sang
I dunno, Melissa, WLorD, those I think of as ballads, w/out much of a country sound to my ears - sorta feel the same way about Jessica -

dig the exclusion of Blue Sky, itís often referred to as one of his countryish songs, I donít hear a trace of that tho
Just joy (Jessica) - & bliss (Blue Sky) - as only this band could do it

That was the original plan but I figure if I've got Charlie and Elvin in there, why not Gregg?

You're not wrong, that's why I added the "-ish" qualifier. Hard for me to put into words, but there's just a certain sound I have in mind, which is why I'm reluctant to include Great Southern.

Put it this way-- His guitar sounds different on Highway Call as compared to Fillmore East. That's the sound I'm chasing.

I'm pretty sure he was on a Hank Jr album during this era but I don't own it. Anybody familiar with that? I'm not sure how prominent Dickey is.

Holy makarel, Iím losin it - my bad!! :wattaclown :
But yeah, BSky doesnít have that same country-oriented sound as those other songs have - in the country vein, Good Time Feeling, from Ď78, is a Country-rock song (know you mentioned 1972-75)

I always loved Just Another Love Song ..............to me a vastly underrated piece of songwriting.

As Vince mentioned, Out To Get Me, also California Blues from the same first Great Southern record.

So it appears that Dickey is not on the album I had in mind. Toy C, Charlie D and Chuck L all appear on "Hank Jr & Friends" but no Dickey.

What about some tracks from the Kitty Wells album Dickey played on? You canít get much more country than Kitty Wells? It also fits in with the 72-75 timeline.

That is indeed a fine album, but I've never been able to distinguish Dickey's presence on it. His contribution was low-key, to say the least.

Don't forget the song Nancy from the Dreams boxset, doesn't get any more country than that tune. The whole album from those sessions could be added. I have my copy somewhere on the shelf.

The country album Dickey did with Nancy to be the first single never got a release. Gregg Allman bragged about it in a 1982 interview which is on YouTube saying he (Gregg) was certainly going to buy a copy. I always assumed Clive Davis and Arista Records unhappy with the sales of their two abb albums and the band's refusal to record the third album of the contract with a producer and creative input unwelcomed by the band had a part to play in the Nancy album not getting a release. Dickey was also under contract by Arista beginning with Dickey Betts and Great Southern in 1977.

I have a vinyl copy of Kitty Wells Capricorn album. It didn't sell so Capricorn didn't do a second one as far as I know. Dickey, if I remember correctly, is credited on dobro but I can spot Dickey on a solo either. But I do hear a Dobro on a couple of tracks in the rhythm mix so I assume that is Dickey. But no solo I noticed.

You should be able to find a copy of the album with Nancy on it in the Vines section, it has been in the trading circles for a long time. Even has nice cover art someone did for it.

The Kitty Wells album happens to be the very first thing I ever purchased via the internet, circa 2000. Anybody remember the GEMM website? Good times.

But yeah, I don't hear Dickey anywhere on it. There's a couple of licks that kind of sound like Toy Caldwell, who's also in the credits, but those aren't real prominent either. Clearly the focus was on Kitty, as it should be.

Nice, thanks. I didn't realize it was widely circulated. That will be my homework for tonight.

EDIT: Well, that was fast. The entire thing is on Youtube. Can't believe I haven't encountered till now. Thanks again!
