I'm having one of those Mandela effect moments ... I thought they announced that they were changing the name to "MRS. Jemima" several years ago? Way past time!

I thought so, too. I thought the name & packaging were redesigned at least a decade ago. Even if management doesn't get the effect of the imagery, how can they think this sort of Jim Crow era brand promotes their product? It's just bad business if nothing else.

I'm constantly surprised how upset people get over this. Why? Were they upset when Federal Express changed their name to FedEx? Land O Lakes Butter removed the Native American maiden from their packaging for several weeks before anyone noticed, and then people got upset when it was pointed out. Did it really effect their life?

They have changed Aunt Jemima considerably over the years, but it was still born out of a minstrel song. It was probably going to happen sooner or later, but considering the climate, but when products are owned by a major corporation, why would they risk being anywhere near the conversation?

Where is the racism with Aunt Jemima? To me it just looks like a southern woman who is a great cook. That pancake mix is the best. So is Uncle Ben's rice.

They started this b.s. with Mia, the Indian lady on Land of Lakes Margarine. Traditionally women are the cooks in the family.

What's next is someone going to say Captain Crunch promotes terrorist pirates? This stuff has to stop.

It's just silly, reading into things.

I'm surprised you missed that Jim Crow era invention of the Black Mammy stereotype. Taken from the late 19th century into the 1950s the fat, dark-skinned woman (who wasn't a slim, light-skinned temptation to the man of the house) merely moved from being a house slave into a domestic low-wage worker good for cooking & cleaning. The 1st Aunt Jemimah pancake mix was developed in the late 1890s & the ads used drawings of a former slave Nancy Green who also made appearances at expositions on behalf of the company. She wasn't paid. She was exploited. Her likeness was also on recipe books, mugs, cookie jars, and other collectibles for which she received no compensation. After her death in the 1920s, the company updated her look to be more modern but still subservient to her white employer in the kitchen. By the 1980s, both Whoopi Goldberg & Oprah started buying the collectibles - which decorate many southern kitchens in the present - to keep them out of circulation as well as to remind themselves & their audiences that black women had a long way to go to break out of non-domestic careers.

I was not born till the late 50's. The first thing I knew about was the Beatles coming to Shea Stadium and I wanted to go but was told I was too young. I really did not hear anything about black people till MLK Jr. was shot.

Why? Was the name and picture the only reason you bought it before?

Or are you just offended that they decided to be less racist?

Those are the only two reasons I can think of why you would stop buying a product because of a name change.

I heard a guy on NPR yesterday saying that the marketing of Aunt Jemima (as a smiling domestic servant) in the early 1900s was appealing to the idea that a black person was happiest while satisfying the needs of white people. Marketing professionals have always known what their audience wants to hear. Think of the audacity of Camel Cigarettes having "doctors" in their advertising as late as the 1960s.

The topic isn't pointless given that companies interested in their bottom line as well as a mission statement to investors are taking a look at their brand image - Land O'Lakes, Uncle Ben's, Aunt Jemima, & Cream of Wheat.

UVA also redesigned its 2-month old redesigned athletic logo after George Floyd's killing when it was pointed out to them that the Cavalier's swords had chained handles representative of the Jefferson-designed chained walls that hid the original black slaves/employees from view. Virginia needs a lot of hand-holding to get them into the 21st century.

Are these big deals in the scheme of things? Not individually, but taken together, it demonstrates some awareness that racism is unacceptable has penetrated corporate minds.

Fast food restaurants employ whoever they can get for the least amount of money. Apparently in your area that appears to be blacks and Latinas (not necessarily the case where I live). I doubt they care about the extra syrup you may use unless you ask for it in a rude or condescending way. Pretty sure most of them didn't dream of the day they would serve you your fast food. If they could find a better job, then they would.

^ Yeah it is like losing an old friend, now the cute lil Eskimo Pie Eskimo is banished to Racist Brand Heaven to join all our old long lost pals like The Frito Bandito, Chief Big Wheel, Uncle Ben, to gather round a big table at Sambo's and eat pancakes served up by Aunt Jemima and tell stories about the good old days of white superiority.

I guess now isn't a real great time to pitch my idea for Taliban Tasteez, little turban shaped donuts - the logo a cute lil cartoon Afghani named Sinbad on a flying carpet bringing Taliban Tasteez to all the happy Americans, with the slogan "Taliban Tasteez - They're TERRORIFIC!"

Think about all the white people who have had to suffer in silence as tens of thousands of baseball fans sang out the hurtful lyrics 'Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks.'"

"No more. The bigotry stops today."

The move was applauded by hurt white people, though they are still criticizing Frito-Lay for how pale and pasty-white the Cracker Jack guy is on the logo.
